Hi everyone! I have a question (not really smart one I am afraid:P) about doing tsumego.

I have some books that consist problems:
1001 life and death ( mastering the basics series )
501 tesuji problems ( mastering the basics series )
Life and Death ( elementary go series )
Tesuji ( elementary go series )
Printed Cho Chikun Elementary problems from Tasuki site
A Polish book with some problems for 6-8 kyu

Books from Elementary Go Series aren't really problem books, so don't know if reading + solving those problems they supply can be regarded as tsumego practicing.

I already read/solved all the above books excluding 501 tesuji and the Polish one. The plan is to do these two I haven't finished, but what next?

I assume that we can solve problems from these books multiple times, but what other people experiences are? I know it seems stupid, but somehow the idea of solving same problems few times seems strange to me I guess there isn't really another way, because the number of problem books in English isn't really that big

Maybe doing same problems time and time again actually is the proper way, because subconsious will be trained to recognize patterns easier?

Hope this thread does make some sense...

I know what you means, but have you tried turning the books sideways and upsides down when you repeat them?
It is surprisingly different at tresses...

One popular opinion is that you can consider a problem as solved when you can clear the best sequence for both sides (e.g. kill move and severest counter-move) in under ten seconds. Of course this only counts if you did not memorize the problem.

I've seen another idea that you should only stop going over a set of problems (with breaks between each repetition) until you can solve them on sight. How well this applies to multiple move problems I don't know but for single move problems it works reasonably well. Perhaps it's spot the initial move on sight for a multi-move problem?

I found that I still had to think about enough of the 1001 life and death problems after having solved them before. So I'd just advocate redoing them. It will make the patterns second nature.

Since you are open to solving problems from non-English sources, you may also want to consider getting some Asian problem books. You can dig around in my blog if you are interested in learning more about Asian go books. Many L19 members seem to have a collection of Asian go books as well.

Try reading this article for a high ranked person's idea of how to progress to amateur 5d/6d using problem books.

Thanks for replies everyone! I don't mind having non English books, generally buying books is quite addictive, so I try to search for reasons why not to do so
