This kind of move must not be your first instinct.
My opinion is that the kosumi you mentioned is not as bad as this move.

thank you for the game.
you game was solid overall.
some mistake here and there...
i see that everyone already commented on your mistakes.

remember it only takes one move to give your opponent the FLOW.
that flow can be 20 point differental.
i hope you have learned something out of this game.
let me take a break from handycap game.

i will play you after i recharge my mental battery.

again, thank you for the game.

At this juncture, I am not ready to accept any Malkovich game.
Sorry to disappoint.

In that case, if you aren't too tied up at the moment, I'd love to see a Magicwand vs shapenaji game!

I agree. I was not careful enough this game… :-)

Sure thing. Thank you for the game, and your time, as well. Of course, I appreciate any time that you are able to spend, so feel free to let me know when you are recharged. In the meantime, I will enjoy your games against stronger players. :-)

I understand that the move is bad because I did not read well. Could you elaborate more on the "first instinct" part, though?

You know how, in corner life and death situations, it's recommended that your first insinct be playing form the outside (hanes and such) because if you fail to kill, you've supported your own group and reduced your opponent's eyespace? It seems like a similar situation to me. If your move works, no one will fault you. However, if you're not certain, it's better to support your weak group, because if that group lives, it still threatens the opponent stones on both sides.

Anyone can feel free to correct my simile if they think I'm misunderstanding, though.

I read the comment just slightly differently. Your first instinct, unless you are a Jedi, should be something which is guaranteed to get some sort of advantage, and should therefore be somewhat lukewarm (if you are a Jedi, of course, your first instinct should be the best move). This kind of move seems to set things on fire, and if you're playing with fire you should make damn sure you can handle it first.

My comment is actually very simple.

Much of Go is about connection and cutting. A connected group is often a strong group, while disconnected groups can be weak and vulnerable to attacks.
As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to keep your stones connected, and cut your opponent's stones.
The black move I singled out simply violates this rule of thumb to the extreme, by inviting white to cut black into two weak groups while maintaining a single connected white chain.

As it happens, I wrote about this topic slightly more than a decade back. I believe what I wrote still stands today.

Also, Charles Matthews also wrote about this on Sensei's Library:
