I've never played a malkovich game. In fact I have played very few turn based games.
I hope to learn a lot.

perhaps something like:

the openings of handicap games always feel hopeless to me.

The 5-3 point is an old-established move which was very popular in the Edo period (1600-1867). Its chief characteristic is that it places its main emphasis on influence - territorially.
I started playing this after reveiwing many of Honinbo Dosaku's games, and have come to know how to use it quite efficiently.

I feel as white will play at either of "a" or "b" either are common approachs.
If white plays at "a" ill do either of "b" or "c". If white plays at "b" my common choices are any "d" or "e" I rarely play out along the wall.
Though I am not a real fan of the Pincer in the beginning of a game. If "b" is played I will pincer at "e".

rubin427's continuation doesn't match the moves that have already been played...

Anyway, this seems like the wrong direction. As Black I would be delighted to be induced to complete my shimari.

At first I was struck almost confused as to why my opponent would play there, then as I calmy passed the confusion I felt a real wanting to pincer it.

Now as I see it.

I can enclose the corner at "a" and my opponent would probably jump out to "c" as to where I would jump out to either "d", a simple exchange or variation.

However the though of a pincer at "b" is enticing. As to where we would possibly see this...

Granted I did not show a far reading at first this looks favorable for black, but 5 though.... after reading out the corner it can be risk to pincer at the lose of the corner and and possibly more.
But, if played right there is alot to gain I can feel it... but I can not read it.
Instead of 5 I could extend at "a" but then most likely giving the wall to white and having a mess of me and my opponent continuing to extend out along the board, however that would make it to complex and should be quite easily seen as a bad out come for black.

Usually I will take the risk but only If I know I can walk out even so that it was not a loss, mostly when cutting groups though.
So I finally chose simply to play at "a", not out of fear of what would happen to the corner with the pincer,
but after remembering an insightful quote... and choosing to stick to something simple.

"Always keep it simple and stick to the basics, the ones who lose are the ones who make it complex."

Please Note,
I can be quite blunt at times I have a, I call it as I see it attitude. I do not intend to be mean or disrespect to other people when doing so, I have full respect to those I talk to and play against. I can just sometimes be almost harsh at times and wanted to give fair warning so that any arguments that would arise because of it can be avoided.

White's imagination is overactive. He fears the double wing too much and doesn't realize even his own variations favor Black.

C13 looks so sad and alone... it's a kind of "I'm going to put a stone somewhere where you might have had a framework later, in order to block that framework.", but what it says to me is "Hi, my name is C13, take a shimari and please pincer/chase me later."

"b" are key points for my opponent at this time which will be described below in the ideas. All this seems jumbled but is described below.
There a several other variations and ideas that came to mind, all important to note but it would take to long to post.
After some breif thought so be it, Ill play Idea 2 and then look to cut.

Idea 1

Either "a" are currently desirable spots to play. But that leaves my opponenet open to play "c" and that would make either of "b" to big to leave alone.

But the way I play, "a" is my probable answer and aim at the stone at R-10. If I play "a" my opponent will probably jump to either of "b" and depending leaving a cutting points at the "c"s. "b" like I said are key points for my opponent. If this course is taken cutting seems very important to win. But he can still also play "d" instead of jumping along the wall. But cutting in the area at any time currently looks to be risky but will be required.

If I do play at either "a" now my opponent can jump to "b" or "c" that leaves me to answer at "d" but doing so my opponent will answer "e" endangering the stone I played at "a".

Now If I play the "a" at R-7 My opponent jumps to either "b" causing me to answer to "c" he will then play at "d" from there I can play "e" or "f". If I answer f he can play "g" taking alot in the corner. Or I can play "e" where probably he will answer "h" getting half the corner and some wall. He could also pincer at "g" instead of "d".

EDIT: edited to mark the current move as circle. I'm still learning. :D

There are other moves. Probably other sente moves (for white)... but for me, and my playing style and playing level - this is the one. I just can't afford to let black get the first play in this area.

If black pincers my lone stone on the east side - then I will move into the center and try to use my influence to erase black's posibilities for territory along the north side while also building modest territory in the south.

A lot of the positions I reviewed in earlier comments still stand, in my opinion.

Handicap games are difficult! :-/

Granted it is a quick reply I will slow down when things are more interesting. I just sort of have nothing to do at the moment, just played about 10 games between Igs and Kgs.

I dont have many if any ideas at the moment.
The stone at R-10 is still being looked at to be pincered.
The stone at C-13 is now taken into consideration my opponent may try something with it soon.
This move which I made is a big move which should have been played earlier, though through some of my thinking I did not mind giving it up if my opponent did take it.

Which was something like this, though the variation may not be quite to accurate, the variations dealing with that wall are quite numerous, this is something that came up.

$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Though this probably would not have happened or be accurate.
Move 8 and 9 can be easily be placed else where, swaping the side of the stone it is played against or such.
But depending on how my opponent plays I had roughy three outcomes that arose I could take the wall and he makes a wall facing the center, or I cut off one of the two sides the side at N-17 or the side at G-17 and I feel that I could possibly have which ever side killed with out a doubt. But that reading to far ahead to be any way accurate.

Below are a few more variations that were thought of.

As I see the board currently there are four points that need attention all marked by a Triangle.

White has played a reducing move, but with this move the stone at C-13 can soon become usefull. This I am not quite worried about.

The mark at Q-17 is somthing that will need to be solved soon as the corner is not completely secure.
And the mark at R-5, this is a big point.

Now to the current area since it does not look to be in good outcome to play elsewhere.

"a" through "e" are ideas that come to mind when answering white.
"c" is the best idea that comes to mind when first surveying the board I use it to establish a decent moyo on the right side ( which can be easliy invaded or reduced which I am not fond of so I will avoid that path ) and apply pressure to the stone played. But I will lose sente (If I even have it) in a few moves on that path.
"d" and "e" Look to be influencial moves, my playing style has a high base on influence at the beginning of the game but either of those two moves can give white a wall and possibly a bit of territory close to the top left.
Which leave us with "a" and "b". I am good at winning a game easily if I can keep my opponent toward the centre and "a" and "b" do just that.
"a" feels to slow of a move, "b" on the other hand if my opponent ingnores I can easliy play and to a high possibility deam his stone useless.

Variation on "b" I see something like this I think. I have seen this variation on the top wall in 2 of Dosaku's games ( I think and not exactly on the top wall it was the bottom and right I think ) and used to daunting effect. Move 7 though in the first part of the variation, in his games were "elsewhere moves". I choose to play move 7 there because it gets a stone in there, which hopefully is not to late.

I am ok with this outcome, the effect should be quite understandable and it is the course I will choose to take. If white strays from course then it will be disasterous for them I think.

I guess other moves have been played on occasion, but one of these is correct literally 99% of the time.

You know the saying "Even a moron connects against a peep"? You just created a situation in which effectively he peeped your one-space jump, and you ignored it instead of connecting.

The good news is that this is a really easy bad habit to break!

Not that I'm much stronger than the players, but here I read "this builds good potential, but my opponent can reduce or invade the potential, so I don't like it." You can always say this about potential (call it moyo, or whatever), especially early in the game. Also, there's no need to lose sente after playing 'c' and if black does lose sente is should be because he's developed a nice framework, left a weak white group for attacking later, or both.

Whatever happens, I sure hope it's sente for white. that's the underpinnings of my entire longterm strategy. I want R7.

I wouldn't have considered Hazushi's response at all. And then Rubin takes advantage of it in a way that makes sense to me, but then his follow up diagram for why he played that move makes no sense to me at all. I understand a bit about how the dan players feel when watching my games because I see moves that make so little sense to me that I can't understand why they were even considered.

Of course, when I look at my games at that strength, I see an equal number of what look like absurd moves to me today. I can't wait til that happens to me at my 3kyu moves.
