@ magicwand

Hey don't go easy on me, and I will avoid vulgure moves that most people my rank make, because if it doesn't work than I shouldn't try it. I really appreciate you playing me. Funnily enough I played a 7 kyu last night, and got so ticked off about all the vulgure plays. I went berserk and thrashed him, but I have complete faith all your moves will be sound and logical because your a dan. I hope to learn what I can from our game

@balmung
A suggestion:

Instead of mentally placing moves into the categories "vulgar" and "good", try the categories "moves I can respond correctly to" and "moves I can't respond correctly to". I think this would be good for your go and mental health. :mrgreen: If you can't "punish" a move, then maybe it actually was reasonable...

a vulgar move is one in which it does not work if played correctly, but your opponent plays it because they want to hope your stupid or they just don't know better. I do not fall prone to vulgure moves thanks to high amounts of tsumego and tesuji I have been studying.

As is evident from balmung's recent sansan invasion video on youtube.

@balmung:
A) That's not the normal meaning of the go term "vulgar": http://senseis.xmp.net/?vulgar

B) That's exactly the thought process I'm suggesting you drop. My point is that you can't reliably tell the difference between a trick with a 1d "punishment difficulty level" and a legitimate move*, and that you should stop pretending to yourself that you can**. A trick with a 1d level punishment is a legitimate move against a 5k. Heck, it's a legitimate move against a 1d, they don't always solve problems right in games. Between two 7d players it would be out of place sometimes. But you seem to be genuinely insulted by trick moves. I don't think that's healthy for your go. If you can't punish it, then it's not a trick.

[*] We know you can't, otherwise you'd be 1d. :)
[**] Originally I said "you should stop trying to", but I think this is more accurate; I'm sorry if it's harsh, it's just how it appears to me...

balmung seems very easily intimidated even by the most innocent moves (my impression from his comments, not yet from his moves). so it will be fun to watch balmung, backed up by a large advantage of 7 handicap stones, against Magicwand, master of mind games and once world's strongest 3d

i believe this game will rely more than usually on black's apparently labile mindset - if he stays calm and collected, 7h may be about correct handi, if he starts anything crazy, he has no chance

what video?

balmung:
if you see a vulgar move, you should be grateful to your opponent for giving you an easy opportunity to get an advantage, especially in a slow game. however, if you have any doubts about the outcome, you shouldn't rush into punishing him in the name of go just because of your feeling ;-)

I think 7 stones is just too little for Balmung, irregardless of his form or attitude.

@Laman:
Hopefully Balmung doesn't mind - I'm not sure if he's explicitly stated that he is the video poster:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdHh90K_N6E

Edit for hide, and also to mention that perhaps my hope that he doesn't mind should have came before my first comment that mentions the video :p

lol I haven't made a youtube video in quite a while, and now I feel I'm being stalked. Any who the video I think your talking about was showing a mistake in the corner my rival made, and how to avoid it. This video in fact was before I reached 6 kyu kgs and had to put up with vulgure plays across the board.

Hey Balmung,
Out of curiosity, how often do you play high handicap games?
