I've been playing this a lot as black. I then expect white to play a or b. I will then choose a pincer. I've been trying to learn 3-4 pincer joseki, so I've been playing them pretty exclusively.

I'll probably play 4, even if white 1 and 3 here are placed differently in the corners. If white approaches with 1, then we'll have fun.

Have a good game, sir.

Well, I'm happy to be involved in a malkovich game so quickly here. Hopefully it's a good means of introduction and a fine learning process for both players. As a brief introduction about my game, I am pretty new to Go and so I feel my game is predicated on soaking up knowledge quickly rather than true ability to read out simple variations. I'm fuseki and yose oriented, often taking the most natural and simple middle game moves. This has led to frustration in my development as a player so here, I hope to try things out of my comfort zone and really expand my thinking.


As W, this is traditionally my first move. Due to a better knowledge of 3-4 points and how they work. Also, this is natural and normal placement of the 2nd stone.

I usually don't fear diagonal fuseki nor of giving my opponent an ideal approach off of a 4-4 stone, here is my plan:

If Black takes any of the three diagonal points, only then will I take a 4-4 stone at B. I feel this and any diagonal fuseki favors W at the smallest level. While I have seen this at 10ky+ level, I haven't yet seen it in many SDK games. I do not expect this.

If Black takes the 4-4 point, B, then I think things get interesting for me as I will take the 3-4 stone facing it. Expecting this flurry of corner approaches and a complicated and exciting game. I do this in part to avoid the common orthodox fuseki as I find it hard to deal with and disadvantageous for a slow and low influenced W opening. W's next play, in my very recent study of this position, should be at the bottom. This is wild and most likely wrong for White but I find it as something interesting and it takes up my time. Feedback on this fuseki is welcome.

As you can see, it is my hope for some kind of exciting and perhaps uncomfortable fuseki. Black can simplify I'm sure by choosing to enclose at 2 or to double approach the bottom left corner instead of circling around the table like this.

This is perhaps long winded for the second stone but unless Black deviates, the direction of play for White will be clear.

I expected white to play the 4-4 in this corner, as it gives him the possibility of an ideal approach. However, this doesn't change my previous plans. However, if he plays a 4-4 in the bottom, I'll consider the Kobayashi fuseki.

I mentioned that Black could play his top enclosure to "simplify" but did not expand so this came to mind. Firstly, black at 1 seems very territorial so I must keep in mind the balance of points and influence and perhaps take advantage of this knowledge as the game progresses. Second, it is my belief that enclosing is not so great for black here! But alas, it's a 5kyu game and wont matter. :) What it does do, however, is creates an orthodox-like fuseki of which White wanted to avoid. Luckily, as I've come up, I used this or a similar fuseki almost any chance I could.

This is the similar fuseki that I refer to. EXTREMELY territorial. However, I don't think the alternate variation is far off in it's balance of territory.

My plan for W6 will be to approach high and proceed like in the first diagram. In a normal game, I'd choose to start the small avalanche at A mostly because the simplest variation feels favorable for White. However here, joseki dictionaries are allowed and I've never actually played the complicated version of small or large avalanche so I'm not sure of it's positioning. If we come to this, perhaps I will open up a dictionary and take a look, maybe make a last minute change of mind.

I feel that setting up a small chinese along the bottom with a small wall facing it is far too good for W. My opponent wont and shouldn't allow this as he has access to the detailed joseki.

Against a through d, I'll probably respond with a pincer. With c or d, I'll pincer closely, and a or b will probably be a looser pincer to try to build something off of my shimari.

If e, I'll low approach his top 3-4. It's mostly a stylistic choice to use the low approach. The low approach also goes with the territorial style I'm going for in this game.

If f, I'll play the star point on the top. This gives me the possibility of a double wing on the top, and I take away the ideal extension from his shimari.

My hidden diagrams don't seem to be working. I'd ask the audience for help but it doesn't appear they've shown up yet. (so no loss, right?) :D

If B attaches at R5, I'll take some time to review the possibilities of the small avalanche joseki. It will likely be the first pause in our play. If it does not seem favorable for W, I will proceed as mentioned previously.

I said that i'd go for a distant pincer against this approach, but looking them up in Kogo's doesn't give much. From that I gather that they aren't played much. I also considered the two space high pincer. However it seems that most variations end up with my pincering stone under attack. As I'm hoping to build something off of my shimari, this sequence from kogo's feels right.

This is not good locally according to Kogo's. It gives me the entire corner. The only reason I'm even mentioning it here, is that white does have a position on the bottom left. This joseki results in a wall facing that 3-4.

There is also the possibility for white to play the diagonal move immediately after the pincer, but this is no longer considered joseki, according to Kogo's, although I've observed that it is the most commonly used move at KGS 6k.

White can also go with a splitting move here, although I've never seen this move at my level. Looking up the result, it seems that I get stable positions on both sides, so I'm fine with that.

All in all, let's just say that I'm glad we're doing this game open Kogo's :D.

White should try to keep Black low on the right side so that he can't make much from the enclosure. This comment is mostly meant to make redundant nervous...

I love B7, I use it without fail as black here so needless to say I'm quite familiar with the common continuations after W8. However, in an effort to expand my play and learn, I considered other courses of action both dealing with preventing too much of a black moyo on the top side. This comes back to a seemingly important realization that I recently had about my Go game. Oftenly, there are two types of moves in a situation. One - prevent your opponent from getting what he wants. Two - take what's yours. It's important in a game to maintain a balance of all kinds of concepts but I feel that in my specific case, this is one of my bigger failures. I play jealously and I will not find the balance in my game. Here is an example that I came up with when contemplating my last move:

To hane and try to mess with blacks top or to push and start the small avalanche? Here I feel that a can be considered playing jealously while b is more aggressive as it's working well with my C4 stone and putting the pressure on Black to hinder me. Not the other way around. In any case, I had decided that I was going to play the avalanche if Black chose this course of action. Unfortunately for my overworked kyu-brain, he did not and I again face the same dilemma.

To take away what's he is working hard for with a or b or to being taking something of mine with the many variations after c? Again, I've reached the same conclusion. I want to play aggressively and NOT start reacting and playing and defensively. At any rate, the ladders all work for White which is HUGE with almost any continuation after white C. I hope to build something at the sacrifice of territory or to start a fight and make things messy.

A move at a is where the ladder comes in. The continuations can be very fighty and I've played them before. I'm not 100% on the positioning in the continuation but each move leading to it seems reasonable and active.

This seemingly reverts to a simple position except with :bt: blocking a continuation. I'm quite fond of Redundant's style so far, I think. (more on that later)A and B are my possibilities as they are the moves I was considering to reduce blacks potential along the top. B seems to violate a principle "Don't touch weak stones". I will be taking my due consultation with Kogo's to see what my other options are and see what my opponent is aiming at with this approach.

In your post of / concerning :w6: I would have liked at least a cursory discussion on pincers there // other black responses you were expecting. I know I'm a bit guilty of missing black plays in my own malkovich (I don't think I've successfully predicted any of his moves yet; not with high precision at least), but perhaps it's something both of us can work on in our other corners. Also, no idea why your diagrams aren't working, but they're viewable enough just as ASCII. A small avalanche would certainly've been cool :P. Avalanche... Hey, I can transpose one of my corners into a wierd small avalanche in my next move...

But then, when I tried to explain why I didn't like the two space jump, I found out that the two space jump joseki actually didn't require the sacrifice of the 3-4 stones, and in the variations that did, I found that it was a worthwhile sacrifice.

Or I can skip it and play W1 directly making a(black) or b(white) and c(both) likely continuations. This leaves me passing up on profit, I believe. So I'll simply take the always big 2-2 point. In the coming time, I am going to have to start thinking about getting sente to enclose my lower left corner and then we can do this all over again in the top left!

Haha, I should have and it's such a better habit to get into. I should have especially mentioned this pincer as it does seem quite lethal. It is so very hard to predict moves at this stage so I simply chose the most orthodox and common move and tried to put detail into that. It will be more interesting if I ever get one right though. :(

The two triggers, plus my move, take us to the end of the joseki. Now it gets interesting.

I feel like a large amount of my play so far has been just following joseki. I'm doing this, as I feel that the game is too early for the outside circumstances to make the joseki a non-even result. That is, locally even results should be even for the whole board.

I feel now that, if white plays locally white might go for this.

But it doesn't seem to be vital for the white group. White is out, and can find at least one eye in the corner if need be. So white should tenuki here, especially as this sequence is gote.

a seems biggest to me. It secures the corner, and makes the top huge. I'd then respond around d.

b secures the corner, and takes away a good approach from my bottom position. It then makes c bigger. I would respond with an approach on the top left.

c makes something that looks a bit like the chinese fuseki. It creates a prepincer for the top left. However, this feels a little awkward given the position in the bottom left. I would probably respond by approaching the bottom left. Although, now I realize that I might want to play d, to prevent white from getting a large scale framework. But then b becomes pretty big. I'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it. I wonder if any observers could comment on whether c is any good? It seems awkward, but as I analyzed it, it seemed to become a good move.

If white plays d, I'd approach the top left. I'd need to think carefully about which approach to choose, as d does influence choice of approach and choice of joseki.

Both triggers are joseki points and something I'm perfectly happy to roll with. It leaves me with some local follow ups at :ec:. I feel this is a waste. I do not want to strengthen something that I can potentially leverage later. So I will tenuki now and by direction of play, I see only one urgent move.... It's hard to imagine playing elsewhere but I must try. Nope. I'm drawing a blank. It's big to play at one of two unfinished corners and this is the obvious one.

I do not like C because it is an extension facing my opponents shimari, it does make miai of around d and e but I'm not accepting this as black now has sente to approach C4. Much better to enclose the bottom left and then I expect Black to approach top left.

I have rough ideas of what I want to do if a. I mean, I think I'll just take some points and not pincer at least. If b, I think it would be too tempting to pass up with a pincer. I will happily play high and immediately be thinking about if I can push Black down on the bottom and make an interesting moyo. I doubt he will play the kobayashi-like c but I do know the joseki following that well and I will be pincering it. Unfortunately this will give up some more territory to Black but at the aim of building something huge for White.

I have options, Black has options but here at least I'm certain that I can predict this move perfectly!

These are the possible approaches. I chose a, as I am pretty low across the board. I need some stones on the fourth line ...

I also could have played b, but then I would be pretty low.

The distant approaches aren't something I usually play. I don't really feel comfortable with the variations.

But... this might not actually give me sente as Black could tenuki instead of protecting that invasion. The reason why I don't choose 'a' is I really don't want black to play at 'b'.

Similar idea, though here I feel it's more important to defend. The downside is that it puts black in the same situation I was in earlier and I fear the avalanche with this move.

I must decide which is more reasonable and harder for Black to tenuki from but I think they are equally important. I will choose one to simplify the situation.
