I'm just curious what people think. If there are a lot more games, we'll have numbers in the 100s, but I'm not sure how much meaning the numbers add to the games. On the other hand, they provide a unique identifier for games, so they might be useful... What do you guys think?

I do not think they are needed. I usually just look for the name of one of the persons playing. I honestly don't remember any numbers I see on that page.

Honestly, maybe only the first ten should be numbered as they are the "start". Maybe only the first three? Either way, I think numbering every one of them is a stretching things considering they are up to the 20s(!!!) now.

I think it's nice to have a unique identifier. That way, if someone new were to ask about something specific, like examples of a 3-3 opening, it would be easier to just tell them the number of a game that uses it. That said, it may not be any better than just linking them to it directly. This IS the internet, after all.

I like the numbers, it's precisely because there are loads that it is worthwhile, it makes the back catalogue of games easier to use, and it is easier to keep track of a particular game. And I'm sure if you do a search for the number it will single it out more easily than the names, as it is the only one. Plus I like things to have numbers :ugeek:

I just tried searching, and got this result;

"The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: malkovich 28."

it seeems the search function needs some work....

The numbers aren't too much of a concern for me. However, for organizational purposes, I wish the titles in the threads were more consistent, from this:

mic vs. Pogo: Malkovich #25
Malkovich #9 - Hummingbird Cyborg vs Marcus316
Malkovich #28 - Shaddy (W, 1d) vs Marcus (B, 4k) - 0H -40.5K
Malkovich #31: padic vs Splatted
malkovich #21 - magicwand vs. wms
Malkovich # Probably 29 Magicwand vs Loons
Malk #19 - magicwand (3d) vs. Dusk Eagle (1k)
Tabemasu vs. Araban : Malkovich #24
Malkovich #30: Splatted (6k) Vs Kirby (?k)

To this:

25. mic vs. Pogo
9. Hummingbird Cyborg vs. Marcus316
28. Shaddy vs. Marcus
31. padic vs. Splatted
21. Magicwand vs. wms
30. Magicwand vs. Loons
19. Magicwand vs. Dusk Eagle
24. Tabemasu vs. Araban
30. Splatted vs. Kirby

(The "Malkovich" in the title is, imo, redundant with the new sub-forum now)

I think numbers are useful, since I do not follow all the games. It is easier to spot when something happens in an interesting game. Especially when same player is playing several games.

Yeah, keep the the numbers but follow Araban's suggestion for standardizing the game titles.

My only suggestion would be that it's handy to have players approximate ranks in the thread subject, e.g.

19. Magicwand (3d) vs. Dusk Eagle (1k)

Has there been any attempt to convert the finished malkovich games into sgf format?
Thinking about the teaching value of those games, it would be a wonderful collection but this would also be very time consuming project.

I think there was *one* attempt by one of the players to convert his own game, but it was a lot of trouble. Maybe if someone could make an automated tool to do it, but even that seems hard to do.

I agree with this. Getting some consistency would help make reading the names of the Malkovich games a lot easier (and I like being able to quickly distinguish the levels of who is playing -- better to know what to expect in the game). When we get some consistency, the numbers become less important, but I still think they are good as a unique identifier for each game.

For the sake of organization, I've edited the titles of the Malkovich games to follow strictly this format (and hope it is continued like this, the subforum threads just looked messy).

Thanks. I was going to do that myself sometime.

I thought about playing a Malkovich game myself, and at the end collect the whole game and all comments, thoughts and the likes, and put in a small book.
That way people who read the book will be able to follow the thought proses of both players throughout the game.
I think it would be very nice (unique) for people to have a deep insight into the thought proses of someone stronger than them.
Over time maybe more games could be added.

the problem is that is would take a huge amount of time. Firstly, to play the whole game in a reasonable time, and secondly, to sort it all out and put it together nicely (else nobody is going to read/use it) and thirdly, to have it published and be cheap enough so that people will want to buy it.

Another challenge would be to get copyright permission from all the players. While the game itself may or may not be copyrighted, the players' comments sure are.

Assuming one starts a new game for this instead of publishing an old one, I don't think this should be a problem. One could simply note in the initial post that the game and the comments will be published and ask spectators to give notice if they don't want their comments/questions published. (A slightly less convenient but possibly more lawyer-friendly alternative is to ask spectators to give notice if they do want their contributions published, and just encourage everyone to do so.)
