Dear All,

I am looking for the name of Canadian player having a Finnish mother and a Czech father (worked at IATA).

He stayed perhaps 1988 or so in my flat in Berlin
and later (1989) I stayed some days in his parents flat in Geneva (Geneve, CH),
when I participated in the Geneva Tournament.

Later he moved to Toronto for studies.
I am not sure whether he continued to play Go.
His age is about 40 years now.

Unfortunately I have lost all details (telefonebooks and names).

Next year I'll be in Canada for about 6 weeks.

Could anyone help, please?

The CGA has membership lists here:
http://www.go-canada.org/ratings.php

Perhaps you will recognize one of the names (if this person is a current CGA member). Sorry I can't be of further help. Good luck!

I browsed through the list, and found one surname that looks Finnish (Hakala), but his first name is English (Ben), which makes it unlikely that he has Finnish/Czech parents. I found no obviously Czech names.

Did he take part in the 1989 Geneva tournament as well? Maybe the Swiss Go Federation still has a list of participants.

There's a Ben Hakala who plays in the Oregon Area, I suppose he might be around 40.

EDIT: if you like, I can send this out to the Oregon Listserv, and see if Ben is the person you're thinking of.

Ben works with me in Seattle, used to live in Toronto. I think his dad still lives in Portland.
I'll ask him...

His father is Finnish, but his mother is not Czech (reverse of what you're looking for anyway)

But he's never been to Geneva, so you're looking for someone else still.

Thanks to your efforts ! All !

I really must get hold of this 1989 Geneva tournament list.

I am afraid he doesn't play Go anymore.

Another Question:
What are THE things you have to do
when you have 2-3 days in the city Vancouver (in August)
(with a family, 2 children (11, 13)

(Rockies, done then)

Your opinions appreciated.

There's a decent list here: http://www.tourismvancouver.com/do/acti ... ee-things/

Of those I would really recommend Granville Island (great food, shopping, and a Kids Market), Stanley Park (beautiful!), Pacific Place, The Grouse Grind (If you and the family are up for 60-90 minutes of hiking, the view is well worth it - or you can pay to take a cable car up the mountain), and the Vancouver Art Gallery. I haven't actually been to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park (planning to go this summer), but I've heard great things about it, and National Geographic named it the "No. 1 City Park Around the World".

I don't know when you will be here, but there are some festivals to check out if you're around:
Celebration of Light International Fireworks Competition - http://www.vancouverfireworks.ca/ - A definite must-see if you can make it.
Bard on the Beach (Shakespeare Festival) - http://www.bardonthebeach.org/
MusicFest Vancouver - http://www.musicfestvancouver.ca/home/index.php?

The kids would also probably love Science World (http://www.scienceworld.ca/), and there's an impressive OMNIMAX Theatre there as well (and another at Pacific Place).

Finally, there are some Go clubs discussed here:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1432

The Canada West Open Go tournament may take place in August, but we usually don't find out unitl 2 or 3 weeks before the event happens :-|

2-3 days is not nearly enough time :)
