So I'm pretty new but I've become rather fascinated with Go. I play online on Tygem and KGS and stuff, but I thought it would be cool to have a real board to play around with. Does anybody have suggestions for a reasonably priced board for a beginner? I'm thinking something not much over $100. Thanks!

I was wondering if this looks like a good one.

Online playing schedule: Every tenth February 29th from 20:00-20:01 (if time permits)
There is no way of telling from that if the set is full size. I would find out before buying it.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

The page did mention that "This is a solid 47x44cm table board with the standard 2cm thickness and great heft." Not sure if that's a full size.

Same dimensions as my full sized folding bamboo board. Same thickness too. Lacks heft though. :P

Hi,
that bamboo set have indeed a good price, still, I would suggest some slightly over budget sets with better wood (especially for the goban).

Other sets like this can be found at Go Game Guru shop.

Shin-kaya (that is basically spruce) is far better than bamboo about the sound, the feeling and aesthetically.

I strongly recommend glass stones (the bigger, the better), probably the best compromise at your budget.

Another istance I would suggest you to evaluate, if you want to take your set around with you, is a foldable board.

Please note that since I am based in Europe I just suggested these 2 well known online shops (that works in dollars as you suggested giving the budget): others can give you better advice about the sellers in your area.

Finally, remember that nice set is a good way to get attention and possibly find new players in your area. ;-)

Enjoy!

I ended up getting the set that Galation suggested. It's arrived at my house but I'm at work. I can't wait to get home and check it out!
