I'm reading Yuan Zhou's "Master Play: The Fighting Styles of Kato Masao and Seo Bong Soo" (which I'm really enjoying) and I came to a variation that I am not convinced of. Can you guys show me where I've gone wrong in my analysis? Here's the section from the book (From page 44):

Quote:
Black tires to move up the edge with :b65:, but this is another mistake. Black is trying to help the upper corner, but he cannot get another eye this way...

White strengthens his assault on the upper right corner with :w66:. Black cannot make an eye on the edge: Black A, White B, Black captures B and White plays C.

The :b65: - :w66: exchange is a big help to White.

That makes sense to me, but it seem like Black can connect at :b3: instead of capturing to guarantee life (now a and b are miai for life?):

I think I can say with a pretty high amount of certainty that you are not incorrect. Black is alive as he stands. It is not really a very complicated situation after B connects at "a", so there weren't that many variations to try out.

I believe these books were put together on the basis of an oral commentary given by Zhou which was video-ed, then transcribed and edited by an amateur. So a reference to a throw-in may have been misinterpreted by the amateur - on the wrong side, for example.

Also there may be a problem with the limited English of a non-native. This game was commented in Go World 15 (this is the sort of thing Kombilo tells you instantly), and there the language is more subtle - Black 65 is "dubious" rather than a mistake, and Black fails to "secure" an eye rather than "get" one.

Thanks. I can see what you mean by an error in transcription. I really just wanted to know if I had read these variations incorrectly somehow, since my goal is to improve my reading.
