Well, so much for the wisdom of crowds. 8 rounds in, and Ilya Shikshin and Artem Kachanovskyy are running away with it. They're two games ahead of the EGC contenders, except for Taranu, who is one game behind. They're even a game ahead of the top Korean players. With only two games to go, one of the two of them should definitely win. http://www.egc2010.fi/results/egc-main-results.txt

Actually, Taranu is two games behind, it's only Ali Jabarin who's one game behind (and Israel are eligible for EGC contention aren't they?)

Yes, they are. Ali Jabarin was not even offered as contender in this poll... seems we have to prepare ourselves for big changes in the European go landscape in the next years. (Thomas Debarre is also only one game behind, though 2 MMS points, a pity that he arrived one day late.)

Cheers Tapir

PS It seems Ilya and Artem really profited from their korean-style insei league practice, no?

Yeah, Jabarin and Taranu were next to each other and I misread the standings.

Jabarin was also in the insei league, which is either a striking coincidence or proof that it was a great idea.

Just in case you are wondering about the tie-breakers, please read

Is this

# 4. SOS-2.
# 5. SOS-3.
# 6. SOS-4.
# 7. SOS-5.
# 8. SOS-6.
# 9. SOS-7.
# 10. SOS-8.
# 11. SOS-9.

some weird joke? (About someone preferring the 12th tie breaker?) I.e. isn't SOS-9 highly likely to be the MMS score of the opponent you're tied with? And what happens with a 3-way tie? :)

And it's down to Artem or Ilya--Artem is 8-1, Ilya is 7-2, with a better SOS.

I guess another surprise would be Dinerchtein at 5-4.

It looks like there's an appeal related to Dinerstein and van Zeist. Any word on what the problem was?

With the current standings, it won't change the championship either way.

Zeist ran out of time due to clock malfunctioning but the referee allowed the game to continue.

The tournament is over, and Ilya Shikshin edged out Artem Kachanovskyy for the title of European Go Champion.

http://www.egc2010.fi/results/egc-main- ... esults.txt

While Ilya played a great tournament, and is certainly deserving of the title, it does seem to leave some bad aji that he gets the win despite having lost to Artem, who also pulled off 8 victories and an MMS of 32. Anyone else think that the head to head match should trump the SOS score? (Or has this subject already been chewed to death?)

I'll let you guess, but the answer isn't 'no'.

More seriously, I suspect if you run through the rules forum, you'll find what you want. Maybe more than you want..

Added: maybe not, but if you go to http://senseis.xmp.net/?DirectComparison, http://senseis.xmp.net/?SOS, you'll be able to find a lot of discussion.

Judging by this survey I have one advice for all the horse betting people: Don't give up your day job.

Cheers,
