It's nice that you use irrational prejudice in an argument against racism

Bantari: yes, they're published http://senseis.xmp.net/?SLSnapshot.

The content is also under the open content license, which is Copyleft (though sadly incompatible with a number of more modern open licenses).

Oh... but you still need to copy the archive and store it locally and update it often, no?
I mean - if SL folds, this link will no longer work. Anybody has a local backup of that?
Otherwise we might end up like with GTL.

What do you mean about the GTL? Anyway, now that you mention it, someone will have an updated snapshot later this hour (I have a slowish connection).

But in any case, I'm not worried about it. I am reasonably confident that Arno would not feel comfortable disappearing Senseis. His public statements sound like he feels he's made a commitment.

I thought I read recently that a few months worth of data got lost during move because the backup was on the same server as the service when it got moved. Maybe I got mixed up, I did not really paid much attention... Maybe it was a different service?

Oh, here is the thread:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8169&hilit=GTL

I think it might be that this got fixed later, but a cold shower, yes?
Just saying.

Yes, and I'm aware of it - but I'm not arguing against racism. I'm arguing against what happened before. You should have quoted this part of my post as well:
Kirby wrote:
It's not rational, yes.

So, yes. My position is irrational in some sense. And in this case, I don't care. Had the event I described not happened, things would have been different. But it happened, and this is my reaction to it.

I didn't post to make friends. I know that most people here love KGS and will defend it to the end, and I'm sure after this thread, have an even lower opinion of me. But from my perspective, someone was mean to me, and so I will be mean to them.

I should note that my prejudice here is not racist or anti-racist. It is anti-KGS.

FWIW I don't enjoy playing on KGS anymore either. It has become unfriendly.

Same here. I still hop on occasionally, but very infrequently. I used to like observing games and chatting there, but without stone sounds observing kinda sucks, and I've grown tired of the overbearing admins (I guess that makes me a teenager that resents the "family friendly" approach).

I used to just idle on KGS and watch games. I don't do that anymore, because the chat is half uninteresting blather and half admins yelling at them. I have no desire to see either, and there's no way to hide the chat. Give me a chat hiding feature and I'd probably be on KGS more.

Just close the "English game room" window (click the X top right). You can see the ongoing games to watch through the active games tab.

I was talking about the games themselves, not the rooms.

Huh... This issue has been talked about before, but just out of curiosity: Why do you feel compelled to read the chat/kibitz when you watch the game? To be honest, most of the time when I watch I am not even aware there is any kibitz... But I hear some people just cannot resist, even if it bothers them. Why?

Clone the game or drag the window over to edge of screen?

It's a great question. Very often, what disgusts us seems to fascinate us.

While I have no real answer to that question I admit that my consumption of popcorn has certainly risen :-D

It's the same for me as if I'm in a room where two people are having a conversation. It's not easy to ignore them even if the conversation is as daft as KGS chat.

I find it more or less impossible to not read text on the screen in front of me, just like I find it nearly impossible to be so absorbed in what I am doing that I will not look up when someone comes into the room. I have no psychological story behind that, it just seems to be how my attention works.

I find both very hard to believe.
When you play in a club, are you that distracted in somebody passing by? Are you so distracted by all faces people around you are making? Do you find it impossible to play in a coffee-shop because people quietly ordering coffee distract you so much? At a tournament, do you find it impossible to concentrate because somebody is just updating the results board? And so on...

This goes for outside Go as well - in our daily lives we constantly have to concentrate on things while other things are going on around us. Each of us has this skill, or we would not be able to function, let alone play Go. The scrolling of the kibitz on KGS is like the *least* distracting thing I can imagine comparing to all the other stuff going on around you while you play - music in the background, kids yelling, dogs barking, TV playing, friends analyzing game on next table, whatever... Most of the time we manage to play with more distraction than a scrolling kibitz on the side of your screen.

The only reason the kibitz would distract you so is because you actually *want* to read it.
But then - that's *your* problem, one that *you* should solve for yourself, not blame the server for.

Am I missing anything?
