Well, since Magicwand says he'll be gone until Tuesday, I'm going to take my time thinking about the next move.

I'm finding that, in these Malkovich games, I should spend a lot of time thinking about the moves. This is extremely difficult for me to do. I am used to playing online mostly, and I play fairly quickly. When it comes to tournaments, I tend to use more time, but the tournament games that I go to are typically 30 to 45 minutes of main time at a maximum.

These Malkovich games span several days, which is a totally new experience to me. It's definitely a test of my patience, as well as a challenge to coming up with good moves. I sometimes feel inclined to play the first move I think of, but I have more time than that here.

I think that these Malkovich games are a positive experience for me, but they are definitely very different than the go that I'm used to playing!

Well, I have sente. I don't really understand Magicwand's last sequence. I think that it's missing the big picture. Magicwand's influence is already pretty great, so it seemed to me that he should have used it. I suppose it's a bit stronger now, but he gave me the opportunity to simply grab more territory.

I feel completely at ease with this game right now. Maybe he'll play something like K8 next. I'm not sure what's best, though.

I considered playing a large knight's enclosure, but it's not good because white can then play somewhere in the center and make one of my enclosures ineffective.

This play baffles me. As well as the fact the Kirby only mentions the large knight's extension as an alternative. What is so great about the left side? White is already strong there. Black has no attack, and the remaining 2 space extension is small. In addition, what relation does this play have with Black's other stones?

:b1: is the obvious play, Not only is it a big point, it has a good relation to the marked stones.

People sometimes shrug off opening mistakes of this kind by saying that it only costs a point or two. But if you lost 2 points on every move you would get crushed. I would not be surprised if the difference between this play and the play in the game is more than two points.

For an alternative you might think of plays like this, to make it a bit easier to throw the tengen stone away. (Not that I recommend it, but it is better than the game play.)

Or if you want to extend from the bottom left corner, extend on the bottom side, where you have potential to develop.

it is a sort of probe. i wanna see how he react to my strange attack.
if i attack too close he might sacrifice 1 stone.
so i am attacking it little bigger.
i hope he runs then game will be quick.
if he still sacrifice then .....it will be long and tiring game.

:w1: is my first thought, aiming at "a", and attacking the tengen stone (marked) on a large scale. Note that if Black plays at "b", the tengen stone still does not have a base.

Magicwand's play may well be better in practice. You can't play too relaxed a game when you are giving three stones. ;) (Note that in their previous game he did not play the wedge on the left side, but approached the top left corner, even though it already had an enclosure. There I think the wedge was plainly superior -- in theory, anyway. But Magicwand's play worked out nicely.)

Well, I couldn't wait. This is why I'm bad at such long games. I am too excited to see what will happen next, so it is hard for me to take a long time to think about the moves...

But in this case, I'm not sure if I have to.

Yilun Yang, a 7d pro, often talks about how amateurs do not play consistently. I think I am guilty of this to a large degree, even in this game. You can play go having different styles, but when you mix up your strategies, it is hard to find a road to victory.

Well, Yilun Yang splits strategy into three groups:
1.) Fighting
2.) Territorial
3.) Moyo

Since this was a handicap game without free placement, and all of my three initial stones were on the star points, it might have made more sense for me to play a moyo or fighting game. But as the game progressed in this case, I've clearly chosen to take territory in the top two corners, whereas white has gone for a great amount of influence.

With this in mind, since white has such great central influence, it doesn't make sense for me to try to adopt a moyo strategy on the bottom half of the board. White already has a ton of central influence, so any moyo that I try to make can easily be extinguished without much effort by white.

So if a moyo game doesn't work, I'm left with trying to adopt either a fighting or territorial strategy on the bottom half of the board. Do I want to fight right now? I don't think so. That's because I believe I am ahead on points, and white has a lot of power. Power is good for attacking, so if I try to start a fight, it won't do me much good.

With this type of thinking in mind, maybe playing the tengen wasn't so good to begin with... But, I think that I am still comfortable in this game, because there is one strategy remaining out of the categories that Yilun Yang has defined: a territorial strategy.

Just like the top, I can continue to try to simply take more points. White doesn't have anything to really attack except for the tengen, and he cannot enclose the entire center anyway. Even if he did, by adopting a territorial strategy, I can still lead on points.

The easiest places for me to make territory right now are the two bottom corners, which are both open. Now I can ask myself, which would be easier for white to invade? I think the bottom right is bigger for white to invade, because I have made a large knight's enclosure.

The move I played in the game is a standard enclosure, which grabs me a bunch of points... And I like points! I'll continue to increase the gap in points between Magicwand and me. Maybe he'll play me again at 2 stones after that.

Magicwand played this move with interesting timing. I have a few options.

First of all, I do not really want to play the 3-3. White has the following possible sequences if I do:

Typically when I see these sequences, white has a move around "a" as well, but in this case, immediately going for these sequences might be too good for him, since he already has some influence radiating along the left side. I don't really want either of these sequences for this reason.

My next thought is to just seal him in:

But I doubt my wall will be that effective.

With the game move, white might still try to live inside, but I keep him more enclosed. There are also some variations where I can kill him if he tries to get inside. I think that this is the best move.

Is it just me, or is Kirby's first sequence for white in the corner extremely good for black?

I think white really needs the stone that Kirby offhandedly notes isn't there.

I certainly hope Kirby means that white pushes and then plays 'a' or some such move; and he doesn't like it because of the aji of the diagramme sequence.

Kirby must reply with B1, of course.

White continues with some thing like "a" or "b". Black usually plays 3 instead of blocking because of the aji left in the c area.

Maybe I'll play this way. I haven't quite decided, yet. I'll decide after Magicwand plays :w2: (if he does).

This is interesting. Could you give an example of how white can exploit the aji if black blocks? Thanks!

If black blocks, white can't quite do anything straight away, but it is very easy for him to play moves in sente around the area. If black ignores white 2, for example, white can try to gouge out the corner.

Obviously black can try to resist (maybe 5 one space higher is annoying), but white clearly has some good points to aim at in black's 'territory'.

The descent also gives white a forcing move at x, which might turn out to be vital for eyeshape, so not descending could be viewed as a harsher attack. I don't know how important this factor is.

White usually plays the clamp now because if black plays to protect his corner during the fight, he will be able to block later, and white will have lost the chance to make this aji.

Descending isn't actually bad, and can be seen in professional games, but isn't particularly common.

EDIT: Actually, my suggested annoying move is not to be feared. White can just live in the corner if necessary:

I could try to block, but I'll play simply like this, as described in the last post. I might be able to deal with the aji otherwise, but it will be easier for me to attack his stones, I think, if I just play simply like this.

I'd like to attack his stones. This requires some planning, though.

I think it's best to put pressure on his group this way. I can get territory by attacking his group.

White could give me a counter pincer, for example, but his group is weak enough that I don't think he'd be successful with it. He has weaknesses around "a", and I can continue to jump out:

If he does pincer, I can attack his pincer stone as well. I don't think that white can successfully counter my attack.

The game is still going pretty smoothly.

If I step back and ignore the score, I can try to consider what stones I've played that seem inefficient:

The two marked stones, above, seem to be the most efficient of the ones I've played. However, of the two, the non-tengen stone at least seemed to give me benefit with invading the top. Furthermore, white has still left the area open, so I have potential to save the stone in the future (maybe).

In either case, those two stones seem inefficient to me. My other stones seem alright, I think, so I feel OK about the game.

Anyway, I predict white might pincer my stone, but I think I will be at an advantage if he does.

Black is still ahead, but White is on pace to win, thanks to Black's lackluster play. I am glad that Kirby is thinking of attacking. However, White has only one weak group now.

:b1: is the obvious play to try to mount an attack, leaning against the White group on the bottom side. But then Black does not seem to have much against the marked White stone, given the weakness of the Black tengen stone (marked).

It seems to me that the key to this position is Black's tengen stone. If it dies a dog's death it will be hard for Black to win. :b1: comes to mind. Now B"a" does attack the marked White stone as well as the White group on the bottom side. If White plays on the bottom side, then B"b" looks good.

Edit: While I was writing this note, Kirby played the approach on the bottom side.

This is a good play, too. It extends Black's framework while attacking, a dual-purpose play. :)

Edit: Unhidden.
