Team:
Why did no one suggest this, or even mention it? If we don't play this, our last move is worse than meaningless. It makes white stronger for no benefit at all. I was doing my best to hit you with rhetorical bludgeons until it came up. Our move is big, but extend from the kick is urgent. Play urgent before big!

Another comment: This exchange is really bad for us. It's basically saying: please white, take the entire corner. We'll take a stone that's stuck way to close to your thickness in exchange.

They've ignored a move which was supposed to be our sente, so the only consistent follow-up is to follow up on it. While I don't know that much about shape, I'm pretty sure that this point is considered the "vital point" in this type of situation (cf. when the low approach to a 4-4 stone is kicked).

Unfortunately, they may have chosen a good time to tenuki, as it's clearly big, and this move doesn't seem to definitively kill that black stone yet. I certainly can't read any way to kill the group after black extends to C11. But we seem to get a fourth line wall for it, which should help to nullify the influence game black is clearly trying to play here. (They don't have any territory yet, after all ;-))

After some sequence gets played out here, I would vote for a second move in the upper right (the 3-4 feels normal) as the biggest play remaining, before we try approaching one of their 4-4s (or perhaps even invading directly). But with the tenuki-happy way black has played so far, I predict they'll probably do something in the upper right now.

@Marcus: your post has a BIC section, are we allowed to read it?

WIC
The more you proposed is big but not urgent. If black nobis at C11 it is a good exchange for us, but there are so many big areas on the board that I think black will just ignore. The most urgent place on the board is to pincer the three black stones on top. If they die we get a huge corner and massive influence. And as far as I can tell killing only needs 2 moves so it is definitely sente. I'm thinking about G16; A close, high pincer to put maximum amount of pressure on the group. Because of our last move our group is very strong and because of B18 the black group’s base is very questionable. I'll be interested in seeing how they handle that group.

Other thought would have been this:

:w14: pressures blacks group so they have to defend. With :w16: we gain a modest amount of territory and get rid of our last weakness. :b17: prevents a double wing and :w18: takes the last truly huge point.

@lesenv:
The problem with tenuki is that it lets white settle his group perfectly. After the extension, white's group is mildly cramped. As it stands, white gets a strong group in the corner. That strong group makes our top group start to look pretty attackable ...

The corner looks big, but it's not urgent. If we wanted to play in the corner, we shouldn't have played c12.

It's been long enough that I'm having to go back and rad through our previous moves to see what I need to talk about. Another couple days and I'll post. Sorry for the delay.

@Marcus (+ further WIC):

Do we actually have all the suggestions we need for this move? I made one, to which Mnemonic replied with some ideas but without, as far as I can see, picking an actual move for his suggestion. And we haven't had anything from Rafa (even though I did spot him lurking on the forum at one point last week).

Sorry for taking a while but I had a tournament this weekend (Won my first book :D )
I've been looking at the position and I still think it is vital to pincer the top group although I've been starting to dislike my original choice. It is probably sente but not "too" severe for Black. After they build up strength with this kind of sequence the might even try and attack the lone stone.

The original move looked like the right idea but the wrong execution. So here are 2 new moves that also attack blacks group but do so with two fundamentally different strategies:

A: This move goes for the kill. I've read some variation and it is very difficult for white to live, especially with the marked stone. If we win the game is almost over; On the other hand if he does live he has probably killed out corner group or builds tremendous influence to undercut our 45 stone. This is kind of a do or die move and will probably not resonate well with our captain. There is also some kind of proverb that say's you should profit from weak groups by attack, not trying to kill them!

B: This move is fundamentally different from A in that I intend to make black run and connect to tengen while taking profit on both sides and reducing the negative effects of an 34 invasion on the top right. One example variation:

@Redundant (and bump!)
Alright, i get your point. The move we made is just inconsistent with our previous play, so it's bad. I guess now this opportunity is gone, let's see what our opponents do next.

We definitely needed to defend here. Black is severly attacking our group and we need some way to keep our corner safe, but still have some access to the center (we don't want to get closed in with no access to the center).

The only issue I have with this move is that, after Black's natural follow-up (which did not happen), we can still be surrounded:

The above may not be great, but it does seal us in, and we want to make sure we can approach tengen with some strength towards the center ... much harder to play the game if Black controls the whole center.

As a side note, I'd probably play the following, which is just more solid:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Now, for this move :w14: , Black has neglected the natural move with :b13: . We can take it now. It means our group is completely safe, and we have access to the center for future fights. Further, it splits off Black's last attacking stone ( :b11: ) and gets ready to put pressure on Black's top group.

The pincer is coming soon, if Black doesn't defend first.

The game is still fluid. I'd like my White soldiers to consider the board and maybe comment on where they think the most important points on the board are. Discuss among yourselves. :)

The important points on the board? I'm sure I'm just stating the obvious here, but it seems they are, in rough order of importance:

1) A pincer on black's top group (I am most embarrassed to admit that I had quite forgotten about this possibility until Mnemonic brought it up - I blame it on how slowly this game is progressing). Indeed, Marcus has just stated he wants to get this if black doesn't get there first, which seems really far more explicit than the captain ought to be in messages to his troops ;-)

2) A second move in the upper-right is obviously huge too.

And that's before we even start to consider things like approaching either of black's star point stones, or splitting the bottom. There are more big moves left on this board than I know what to do with :lol:

PS: Is Rafa still involved in this game, on our team? If you're reading this Rafa (I certainly recall seeing you about on the forum a few times recently, even if not posting here), I'd certainly like you to be (and I assume the same is true of my team-mates)

The pincer at the top is sooo huge! It completely destroys the purpose of blacks 3 stones, it gives us much needs influence and supports our 4-5 stone. It might be a style thing but I think I disagree with our captains last move choice :D Black must protect now and then I don't really have a clue where to play.

After thinking about it a bit it isn't easy for black to choose an extension because we have undercut his stones.

[go]$$Bcm11 I think this will be most likely. Is there anything we could do with the aji at (a)?
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . O . . . a . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . X . . . . . , . . . |[/go]

Now the real question is: What do we do now. We could either protect the upper right corner or we could "invade" black’s framework on the lower side. I'm not sure which I prefer, protecting seems ugly and slow and gives black time to consolidate. But if black invades the corner, does our stone still have any use at all?

Considering the enclosure: robinz, what’s your opinion on a 33 enclose. Yes it looks slow and inefficient, but if we play the normal 34 a R13 approach by black looks awful (can't pincer, can't cap, furthers black’s framework, destroys our corner territory, ect.)

I think this is a reasonable point (I don't absolutely agree that we can't pincer, but can certainly see that it might not be the best idea when black has so many stones exerting influence in that area), and think the 3-3 doesn't look like such a bad idea. I must admit though, I know almost nothing about how to use a 5-4 stone properly - I only suggested it at the start because I thought using it in a fairly non-serious game like this might teach me something ;-) (That and I generally prefer playing for influence rather than territory in the opening - although I generally need some reasonable amount of territory by about move 40/50 or I start to get worried :-?)

Because if the white upper-left group is out of danger, then our upper-left group is in danger. And even if we can save it by running towards tengen the profit white makes on top would be unacceptable.

Can you post a variation to your move? I was thinking about playing there, too, but i didn't see any good come out of my moves.

@lesenv

I dont imagine white letting us have yet another corner... so they would probably play somthing along these lines.... builds a wall for us that works with the rest of our stones, and keeps white small in the corner... a follow up for black around (a) would make black very strong.. the center stone works well with (a) too..
