So I think it would be a good idea if everyone who starts playing on Tygem regularly (20+ games) posted their Tygem rank and KGS rank for comparison. This would be good for a few reasons:

1. It gives people a good idea of what rank to sign up as.
2. It compares the play style of the two servers.
3. If there truly are sand baggers, then perhaps there really is no difference between 18k and 10k for example. This would be good to know.

There's a Rank comparison chart of Sensei's but it has very few Tygem ranks on there, so compiling them here might be the best way.

To start it off I'm 3d KGS / 4d Tygem

KGS: Invader, gilgil
Online playing schedule: Teaching, tournaments, and CGL (UofT)
5d KGS (solid, several accounts, but not an upper-level 5d. it will be some time before i can become a 6d.

7d Tygem and still climbing (still winning and getting closer to 8d, but if i actually get 8d i will be truly disturbed ^^)

I find Tygem 5d to be below kgs 4d, and as low as kgs 2d or even 1d frequently, though usually at least kgs 2d.
I find Tygem 6d to be mostly like kgs 3d, occasionally like 4d, never 5d.
7d so far feel about kgs 5d level, but still some are weaker than kgs 5d.

Wbaduk it is easy for me to get 7d, but i dont play there anymore so i dont know if i can get 8d.
in the Canadian go association, for reference, i am 5-dan (we rarely get chances to change our rating unless we play a lot in online league. Anywho, im sure i am top-level 5d in canada or essentially 6d by now)

I feel so weird being 7d. Anywhere. because I should not be 7d yet. Anywhere.

Tygem is definitely 2 stones higher than KGS ranks.

Hmm, I have a KGS account on the borderline between 1k/1d, but my Tygem account's at 4d. I got dropped to 3d briefly, but won 9 straight afterwards, so it was pretty easy to get my rank back up.

yeah, that's how it is. sounds right. i am confident i will bump to tygem 8d soon (which i think is ridiculous, but hey, good for the ego ;p). 8d is so close to 9d, which is like...over 9000!

Are Tygem ranks softer than Oro/WBaduk ranks? (Just seeking a general survey of opinions.)

I think they are about the same. I registered on tygem with 2 5d accounts when it opened. both got demoted to 4d. on wbaduk, I recently managed to get to 5d. I got demoted to 4d once, but after the next game I was 5d again. I think I have improved since I started on tygem, and now I think I could be able to have a stable tygem 5d.

so how is everybody rank progressed in Tygem? I think it is KGS + 2 rank = Tygem.

The reason I'm interested in this is because the guide to become strong through doing Tsumego suggests that after finishing Guanzi pu + 4500 other problems, you should be at 7 dan on Tygem. Which is like 5 dan on KGS. If the method and the rank conversion are correct, then GO is insanely deep. Currenly I am at 4d tygem 2d kgs now. Doing tsumego suggested in the guide to become stronger.

Go ranks on servers are all messed up I think. I'm kgs 2d, 1k/1d on tygem and igs and 4 kyu in Europe. I'm playing on two stones with Polish 4d, but I'm also able to lose game to 6kyu on real tournament. If you say that you are 2d on kgs and 5d on tygem or wbaduk then something is really wrong here because we can play on even terms on one server but on the other we will play with 4 handicap stones.

It's like The Matrix, isn't it? Someone should remake it for go players.

White: "Do you think my having a high rating in this place has anything to do with my go strength in real life? Do you think that's air you are breathing right now? Interesting!"

Black: "I know tesuji." (And Kung fu :-))

I think your case is extreme...KGS and real life seems close. Tygem is 2 stones weaker than KGS.
2d kgs, 4d tygem, both solid.

I'm necroing this thread because I'm hosting a tournament next month with several Korean players who only play Tygem along with a lot of unfamiliar faces who may only have KGS ranks. Has any consensus been reached on rank conversion between these two servers?

In my experience, Tygem low-dan ranks are 1 or 2 stones weaker and it seems to be about even at 3kyu. Anything below that and I'm unsure.

Where would you rate a Tygem 9kyu in KGS?

Meh. Tesuji. Everyone knows tesuji.

"I know Furikawari" would be a far more memorable quote.

Rank: KGS 3k
KGS: LiKao / Loki
If I remember correctly I played a bit on tygem as 5k KGS, and lost more than half at 9k tygem. But perhaps that was just caused by me being unfamiliar with their style, so it's hard to say.

Not playing too much serious games on KGS and Tygem lately: actually 1d kgs, 2d tygem (where 3 dan should be a no problem but I play so rarely...). I think two stones difference mentioned earlier by Manastin is most adequate way to determine correct rank on both servers. But still, it is all messed up because it is 4 or more stones of difference of my real life ranking (or maybe Polish kyu's are sooooo strong?...)

I agree. " KGS Rank = Tygem Rank - 2 stones " appears to me more applicable to dans and higher kyus, but not mid to lower kyus.
I would say 9k Tygem is much stronger than 9k KGS (if memory serves).

At 5k KGS, I had a hard time playing 7k on Tygem.
Now that I am 3k on KGS, I am about 1k Tygem.
