When I was in jail, I was the top player. I lived in a cell with another individual who was second strongest after me, so we had fun playing when all cells were closed.

Got 100 days for throwing a punch at a guy. The punch missed his face, so he didn't get hurt at all. But the cops standing by were not amused.

I think if I went to prison and brought Igo Hatsuyoron with me, I'd come out several stones stronger.

Memorize joseki, lose 2 stones. Go to prison, gain 2 stones.

It's not every day one reads such a sentence.
May I ask which continent was this ? And was it chess or Go ?
Maybe you were still a teenager and have improved since. :)

I'm Canadian.

Talking about chess, since the article is about chess.

I also played Go in jail. I would draw a board on paper using pencil and play against myself.

I'm not much of a lawbreaker, just got into a fight. Didn't so much as scratch the guy, my punch missed him. Still got arrested.

Thanks.
May I ask how it reached that point ( the launch of the missed punch ) ?

...because when God created the world, he created the Devil, too.

Thanks.

My wishful thinking was for something less cosmic,
and more anecdotal, so maybe one could learn a lesson.
But thanks, anyway. :)
