L19 SC2 tournament for Go players and friends!
Friday, March 18, 2011 on NA bnet
Checkin: 9:12 PM CST in "L19" room on bnet. I pushed back the start time since it's a Friday this time to help PST folks get home from work. This still gives us enough time to wrap up before GSL finals begin (1:00 AM CST).

Format: ETA: "Win-Win". See my post below.

I'll be casting some of the games again, and I've moved to http://justin.tv/killerducky because all the cool kids are on jtv now. :ugeek:

Google spreadsheet I'm using for signups/pairing (First tab is new for this tourny):
http://tinyurl.com/25ota85

Maps: Using MLG maps because America! F-yeah!
MLG Metalopolis*
MLG Scrap Station
MLG Shakuras Plateau*
MLG Shattered Temple*
MLG Xel'Naga Caverns*
MLG ICCup Testbug*
MLG GSL Crossfire SE

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmes ... _id=197335
Quote:
Key notes are the decisions to prevent close spawns on Meta and Shattered Temple, as well as forcing Shakuras to be cross pos only.

All maps marked with a * will have building blockers at the ramp to prevent the standard bunker/pylon walling in.

Results: Congratulations to plinkzz for winning!

May be more convenient on the weekend for me but I'm in.

Count NeoNemesis, Jinqianhan and etothejwn in.

Thanks for doing this again.

I can make a banner to promote this on teamliquid.net. Anybody have an attractive, high-quality screenshot that would work? Maybe something with a nice flashy engagement with colossi or something? I plan on combining it with the site banner/font.

Well I think keeping it more just L19 and word of mouth is something that keeps it so this tourny isn't lost in a flood of other TL tournies, with no one knowing each other etc etc. So it's cool that Neo recruits his brother and friend (plus they play Go anyways) but I don't want to just open it to random tl.net ppl.

Bigger isn't always better. (Although getting a perfect 2^4=16 players would be nice).

That seems reasonable. Probably wouldn't be able to snag Jinro anyway.

I'm in, as always.

BillyBanana.755

For the tl.net post, maybe there's a way to make people "prove" that they play go, like by putting something in their KGS profile.

Yo, I just thought of a sick tournament format that I want to try instead of the pools+brackets. I've played this format on another site (http://www.dailygamon.com) and I think it'd be fun for this too. It's called Win-Win.

It's a ladder where you only play BO1s against people with the same number of wins as you, and it's a race to N-wins. You're eliminated when you're the last person on a level -- everyone else has more wins than you, so you have no one left to play.

At the beginning of the tournament everyone will get their next game very fast because everyone is bunched up. Later as it stretches out you start having to wait for someone on the level below you to win so you can play them. Ultimately the length of the tournament is bounded by how fast people drop out of level 0, 1, 2, etc. So typically it will take log2(N)+N-2 rounds to finish. For a 12 person tourny that is roughly 4+12-2=14 rounds.

log2(N)-1 rounds for boiling down to the last level 0 game. These would be worst-case game times. Then N-1 more rounds for eliminating people from levels 0 to N-1. Fortunately these would be typical-case game times, the next game would be able to start immediately after.
Hooray for recreational math, lol!

It's a bit tight with finishing before GSL finals, but I just think it would be a really cool format to try. Also if for some reason people have to leave during the tourny the format has a gracious way to deal with that. Right now we have 9 players, if we get a whole lot more it will probably just be too much, but for now if we stay relatively low numbers what do people think about trying it?

ETA: I have some ideas for how to slightly modify this format to save some time. For some of the earlier rounds the last 2 people are eliminated instead of just the last 1. Basically I reserve the right to do whatever I want and I assume you guys trust me.

As discussed on KGS: I'm in, almost assuredly. I'll verify with you later, but I'm 90% sure I can make it right now.

I'm up for pretty much any format, as long as it doesn't go on too long. It's starting about 15 minutes before I would otherwise go to bed. I'd probably get tired/bored after about 8 or 9 games.

Thanks again for running these. If there's still room, my friend SirLarr.921 would like to join.

Congrats to plinkzz for winning the March tourny! Also a shoutout to etothejwn for going on a 3 game winning streak at the end to reach the finals.

I casted the final 3 matches, VOD here: http://www.justin.tv/killerducky/b/281855854
Timestamps for the games:
6:00 - Jinqianhan v etothejwn
22:00 - BillyBanana v etothejwn
57:00 - plinkzz v etothejwn - Game 1
1:12:00 - plinkzz v etothejwn - Game 2
Game 3 not needed

ETA: I just used the TvP strategy etothejwn used (mass tank+marine+bunker). 100% winrate after 1 game. :)

Yeah, that was killer. After the game I was thinking Carriers might have been appropriate.

Well I didn't post about my second game, where the Protoss simply walked around the gold base with all the bunkers and tanks. He killed the 3rd, and then kept walking to kill the nat. :-? Tanks so immobile!
