Hi,

I've made a pause from Go due to too much work etc... Now I'm slowly catching up and playing some informal games on KGS. While browsing L19² I had the impression that the number of new posts and topics has declined since last October?

Is this right? Or is this a misconception since I'm not so deeply involved in the topics at the moment?

Cheers,
Michael

On the whole, I can't really agree. There may be a lull on a daily or bi-weekly basis, but activity on the forum seems consistent and generally high-quality to me.

Much of the traffic seems to be in the Malkovich forum, where I personally am following several games. Additionally, the study group forum has been active as of late. If at the moment the general discussion and off-topic forums are not so busy, I think it's only a matter of time before someone posts something interesting again.

I think the Malkovich forum got less active since there are fewer active games. The rest of the forum seems about as active as always.

I'm not sure if this is the case, but it seems to me that with the evolution from rec.games.go > GoDiscussions.com > L19 , the conversations have gradually become more civilized and less rollicking - for better and worse. Just my impression.

Like anything else people will become enthused/distracted for periods of time. I wouldn't worry about it.

I definitely had that impression for a week or two.

I've noticed for quite a while that activity here seemed to be dropping off. I think this is also true for go activity as a whole in the United States, at least as measured by AGA membership. I think BGA membership is also down so perhaps it's a more widespread problem for the Western go world as a whole.

I suspect this is at least in part due to the Hikaru No Go boom finally waning; there aren't as many enthusiastic newbies around. Couple that with major contributors to this board like HKA and DrStraw not posting as much and it's bound to be noticed. Personally, I don't find the posts to be so interesting these days (mostly Malkovich games on the front page), and so I tend not to get involved.

Time will tell if it's a cyclical downtown or something else.

Speaking of major contributors of the past, anyone knows if Alex Weldon is still playing Go?
