Actually I just read that article properly..

Sam Sloan, head of Ishi Press International’s US arm, told the Huffington Post that when My New Order was published in 1941, there was “nothing on the back cover … so I decided to use that empty space for an advertisement for the book”!

Thats the same Ishi press!

It is not really the same Ishi Press. I forget the details after all these years but when Ishi stopped publishing years ago Sam Sloan took over. I forget how but I am sure there are people here who remember more details than I.

I do not know the details or the legal ins and outs, but Ishi Press International is not the same as the old Ishi Press of the 1960s and 70s. I think that Sloan owns the copyright of some of the original Ishi Press titles, though.

That is one man's story. I have no idea if it is true or not. It may be totally true or it may be one man's very biased point of view. I do remember hearing some uncomplimentary things about Sam Sloan a long time ago.

I am not passing judgment here. I do not know enough to say one way or the other. But I would like to see some independent corroboration of all he claims in that article.

On the Sam Sloan in an interesting character theme (in case you didn't get that from browsing/scrolling his website!), here's an article he [edit] apparently [/edit] wrote about Manfred Wimmer, the first Western Go professional. Explicit content.

While I have not heard much good about Sam Sloan -- I am a friend of Berlekamp's, after all --, I seriously doubt whether he wrote that scurrilous article. It looks like a hatchet job to me, an attack against both Wimmer and Sloan. Obscenity aside, the writing does not sound like Sloan to me.

Edit: Having read more of Sloan's writings on his web site, I see that I was not familiar with the range of his prose. I cannot really say what Sloan sounds like. It does seem likely that Sloan needs psychological help, help which he would neither seek nor accept. That said, I still have my doubts about his authorship of the Wimmer article.

Bill, fair point, I should have said "here's a supposed mirror of an article...". There's a similar post from 1996 to rec.games.go (with the mistake of Mozambique instead of Madagascar) but I see in there "John Tromp" casts doubt to its authenticity.
