Actually, I preferred his position, but 35 Big mistake by Andrew puts me in the lead, but it is still early 43 Andrew played an superb move in the centre, worthy of alphago 70 a nice tesuji to fight back, copied from alphago, Andrew automatically resists, and his position collapses. Especially when he enters overtime 124 etc a nice way to create aji inside 130 my proudest move of the game, the clearest tesuji to live, and live in the best possible way 196, 212, very precise endgame moves that I am proud of I seem to perform better at long games, and after alphago, we've been introduced to so many more interesting ideas, but those take time to consider in a game. I basically have a record low zero moves that I regret. I got some good practice living and using aji in an enemy area. And my endgame seemed as near to perfect as I can dream of. Most of all, my plan to use as little time as possible worked very well. We had honoured guest Matthew Macfadyen as our commentator, but it was a little irritating to see that he had repeatedly criticised our moves, saying we made disappointing misreads, when most of the time our reading was correct (as players, you have to be more responsible over your moves that observers, and consider all the ways your opponents might fight back), and he was making basic errors, say missing a double atari. ___ I was terribly nervous about this game, my first time playing for the title. I didn't get much sleep the 3 nights before it, resorting to zen music, computer screen blackout, tablets, etc the night before. And memorising Poe's poem A dream within a dream, an attempt at calming down by thinking of something else. I still feel pretty disoriented (hence a bit less excited) from the alphago developments, not trusting prior theory/"knowledge" anymore, but not replacing it with much solid ground to stand on. It has changed my style to the point I can't remember how I used to play. I think I fight more, particularly over efficiency, I have learnt much more clarity on positional judgement and territory exchanges, gotten more flexibility, and and am even more reliant on reading lots of variations. And yet, I cannot say that I feel stronger, given my relatively poor online results lately. ]RE[W+Resign] ;B[dd]C[I didn't feel able to prepare any opening or strategy against andrew. It was still that alphago disoriented me, and made go so much deeper and bigger. There are too many strands to follow. My only strategy was to limit my time usage as much as possible. We are both known for thinking a lot, researching alphago, and just spending a lot of time on go. I was disappointed to lose on time against andrew in the challengers, though my position was probably in trouble anyway. Even 3 hours is finite. So I would stop to think when I had to make a decision, and hopefully during my opponent's time. 2 minutes a move average was my aim, therefore much less than that was allocated for normal moves. I should probably buy my own board to practise on, as looking at a real board is surprisingly different from a computer screen. The moves you notice are different, the way you evaluate the board position is different.] ;W[dp]C[my endgame is known for being strong, so perhaps I'd like to play Lee chang-ho style and get to the endgame quickly, simplifying fighting situations, and not having to worrying about my own groups chased around or having to attack enemy groups to make up for lost territory, unless it was sufficiently clear how to profit.] ;B[pc]C[It appears that slow games are very good for me. My level appears to rise quite a bit as I get to think about different variations and do more reading. And plan for expected local variations, and if there is anything I can do to fight back.] ;W[pp]C[I kind of wanted to move away from the complexities of alphago's style, and go back to the stability of 4-4s. I still seem to be worse than other players my strength in managing 3-4 fighting.] ;B[qn] ;W[nq] (;B[pf]C[I wasn't quite able to think clearly yet about the opening logic, I was too nervous. But looking at this, I think W's strategy should be to get a solid group at the top, and not play to close to this shimari. A weak group at the top or the right is what B wants.] ;W[fc] (;B[id] ;W[cf]C[automatic] (;B[fe]C[surprising, andrew said he was influenced by Bao Yun's love of this move. online commentary suggested tenuki, which is certainly an idea, probably B's local follow up is at C17. But I doubt alphago would directly tenuki, as this is only place on the board where there is a critical fight right now] (;W[dc]C[the main human joseki ] ;B[cc] ;W[cd]C[andrew actively plays a weird joseki, but proceeds to spend a long time thinking. And in that time, I got to remind myself what the standard joseki is, make a positional judgement, decide that B has a disappointingly large amount of territory, but W's direction was better, making Q14 look worse. And reading how the follow up invasion around L17 would go for me. And then what about new moves such as D15. And some time, just resting and waiting. After 1 hour, we are only up to here, 43 of which are andrew's There are two main things that andrew might be considering - which order to atari in. He did get that right. And whether new moves like D15 were any good.] (;B[ce]C[correct order] (;W[bd]C[I needed less than a second to play these moves. But as soon as I played it I wondered if I had made a mistake, as I hadn't seriously considered the D15 variation] ;B[ec] (;W[db] (;B[be]C[correct, though E18 would lead to the exact same variation] (;W[bc] ;B[eb] (;W[ed] ;B[de] ;W[fb]C[already 90 mins used up, B used 72, and I only added a minute to reach 18] ;B[cb] ;W[ea] ;B[bb]C[so I got a lot of time to think about this joseki, and perhaps I could see why alphago didn't play this as white. B gets a lot of territory, while W says that W's direction of play is good ] ;W[ee]C[the only move that makes sense - make F15 look bad, but actually W's strategy in this joseki seems to give up too much territory for my liking It is relatively painful for W to push through here as well, especially as the B17 for B18 exchange loses 4 + 1/12 points already] ;B[ef] ;W[df] ;B[fd]C[some pros don't atari here as it loses points when it dies (losing the G16 move) but it helps out J16 as H17 will be sente, and gives B a lot more aji, I think I agree with this atari.] ;W[ec] ;B[bf] ;W[bg] (;B[cg]C[what??? instantly, I prefer W. Essentially, B shouldn't be trying to save the F15 stones. The territory B could have got on the left was far bigger ] ;W[dg] ;B[eg] ;W[dh] ;B[ac] (;W[eh]C[this is the sort of shape point that I would miss if I was sufficiently nervous. Luckily while I was pretty skittish, this still only took me a few seconds. B is facing a small disaster locally after C13. But, for players at our level, it is still a long game. My move threatens to capture some stones (I have the ladder)] (;B[gf]C[extremely inefficient, but it is the only move to continue locally or not ... see variation for better] (;W[ib]C[surely correct I'd love to aim at the thinness around G13/H15, but there is nothing yet and I don't mind terribly if B H18 and I just accept the sacrifice, as L17 still sets up a good invasion, or even H15 and K17] (;B[hi]C[I had sort of been thinking B could play G12, but once andrew played here, I was impressed. This move is so much better, it makes the idea of playing G12 look dumb. Especially when a bit behind, B needs to play well. Locally this prevents W G13 etc I think andrew really showed off his sense of centre here, it may or may not have been because of his alphago study, I don't know. In my nervousness, I wanted a quick end to the game, and spent a long time on the G13 cut, because if that worked, then I wouldn't have to worry about the E12 group. But actually it "clearly" doesn't really work - B has just spent a move defending it. So B played far enough out to efficiently threaten E12, defend his group, reduce W's potential and rapidly expand B's, without leaving any immediate weakness behind. What a superb move!] (;W[ql]C[I criticised myself a little for this move at the time, saying I was too scared of moyos, but perhaps I was too harsh. While I think C7 is clearly proper, and this B area is too open for W not to be able to wipe out most of the potential even if B adds another move, still this showed my instinctive strategy. Simplify the game and get to endgame quickly. Even if the left side is technically bigger, it is not as if any of my groups are in real danger - I can just accept a few points of territory lost to defend them. Whereas on the right side, if B creates a large moyo, and I can't find a good way to reduce, I could create a weak group that would be attacked, and lose me the game. This move makes the game simpler, probably a little in my favour, and follows a Lee Chang-ho style plan.] (;B[qj] ;W[pn]C[As I said in the post-game review, I hate to give up territory with these sorts of moves, but if I am confident at endgame, it is probably worth it.] (;B[dn]C[I very much liked this move by Andrew again. It seemed a superb way to play on the weaknesses of my group above. I'm guessing this move has been influenced by alphago. When you attack, you need to know where the territory is coming from, so you want to lead the fighting towards the corners where there is territory to fight over, and in this case, it is very clear. As this seems the most severe move against both sides. If W defends D12, there will be a territory haemorrhage in the corner and there will still be problems at C12 or B11. As D6 acts pretty severely against D4. But if W defends D4, there will also be a territory haemorrhage as W spends several moves making life while B takes sente, while making points in the left etc. If B was more solid in the G13 area, a move like C9 to directly go for the eyespace would be better, but in this game, it is not entirely clear whether W can just pincer C9, W may get the corner, having to live small with D12, but it should be possible (maybe? needs reading). As B creates a weak group at C9, it is hard to see where B's profit is.] (;W[dl]C[in the end, this was the sealed move. We stood up to go to lunch, and looking at the board from the other side (I was sitting on the left), D9 suddenly seemed better shape enough for me to regret my choice. It is frustrating enough how much your perspective on the board changes how you think about the game that I wondered if we were allowed to try out variations on a separate board. The answer was no ... . But upon more consideration, I played D8 for a reason, I leave problems at B11, but it was so that I could play the H4 move more easily. (i.e. defend D4 better)] ;B[el]C[huh? after lunch break, for some reason, my confidence grew. Before it, I had felt like I was just playing moves and hoping for the best (I suppose that is always the case in the opening), but I felt more comfortable when I was reading all the key variations before making a decision. So before this move I had been reading B11 and K18 variations, and Q13. I didn't feel the need to read R5/Q5 as that is relatively simple and standard. I couldn't see any gain for this move, losing the B11 aji. Pretty much any move in this area seemed to be semi sente for B, so this seemed very aji-keshi for a move without much purpose. After this move, perhaps B should have played the crude variation with F5 after H4, as this stone actually becomes a good exchange.] (;W[dk]C[I'm glad I just defended. I think I used to be very upset to just defend like this and would automatically want to hane E9. But after a combination of seeing alphago play this sort of move and understanding better why, and having been worried about the B11 all this time, just pulling back seemed good.] ;B[fp]C[as expected, very severe] (;W[eo]C[the simplest variation and most standard] ;B[cq] (;W[cp]C[a little painful to block here, but otherwise, D4 seems too weak] ;B[dq] ;W[hp]C[a natural flow in the shape, sort of a probe to ask B to defend first] ;B[ep] ;W[do] (;B[ho]C[ tesuji to get out and prevent F5] (;W[ip] ;B[go]C[B's strategy has to be to invade at L4 and build the centre] (;W[fn]C[commentators said this was risky, but I maintain that it was a good move this was my shape sense, as I was worried about L4, and really didn't want B to be too solid here, but also didn't want to give up too may points. Basically I didn't see anything B could do to punish this move. So it simply seemed better than the pain that would follow if I played E6 and B got E7 But it was also a little out of annoyance too that I didn't like the variation after L4. basically everything that B plays locally is sente, but like this I can aim to protect with more territory, for example, at B5 or G7 in the post game review, andrew mentioned being upset he couldn't get both E9 in sente, and still save C12. I was pretty clear about that too, I mustn't let him get both. It's nice we were thinking along the same lines.] (;B[dm]C[this was a move that shocked me. This move has more impact after B E9, so I have no choice but to cut. I think it's a clever move locally, but a bit aji-keshi - B got territory and W got solid, so I no longer had worries over my J4 group] ;W[em] (;B[bp] (;W[cm] ;B[bo]C[again aji-keshi, I had some issues with D10 and C6] ;W[bn]C[looks like the best endgame, but A6 is painful note that F7 is not sente now] ;B[jb]C[my mood was low upon seeing this. I had been thinking that the flow of the game depends on who gets this move, and not finding any good solution for W, whether to take sente for L17 or a way to fight back if B got it. So I really should have played L17 instead of C4 or something. It felt like I had to play H18, but that was miserable. B getting K17 was huge, and fixed B's shape so well And yet, I had been thinking if I could exchange with K17, wondering about the weaknesses in the G14 group's shape for the whole game, and I realised that I could copy alphago's tesuji from the 5th self-play game of the recent release of fan hui commentaries. So without too much reading, more a sense that it must be the best move, I played it.] (;W[hd]C[this seems to work so well because B is so thin, and W is so solid. And B has just played a move with a connection weakness to it. without this move, it would have been a very long game. My idea was that B has to defend and stop H15, so B has only H15 or J15, but if J15, I can hane at K17, and live on both sides and if H15, then I hadn't really read a good variation, but it leaves B with cutting points. We found some good variations in the post game review.] (;B[hb]C[it shocked me that andrew would spend so long thinking about simple moves but was very quick here.] (;W[he]C[I immediately felt very comfortable with the game, I had been eyeing B's weaknesses here the whole time, and I finally found a way to cut B. With this weak group, it is very hard for B to keep control of the upper side, and certainly very hard for B to take sente. right now B needs to cover two weaknesses - J17 and H13, it is very hard to cover both.] (;B[hc]C[the stubborn move, shorting W's liberties and refusing to sacrifice E13, but it just loses more and more] ;W[ie] (;B[hg] ;W[gc] (;B[jd] ;W[gd] (;B[jf]C[this doesn't work as W has the ladder andrew was running out of time] ;W[je] ;B[ke] ;W[ig]C[this was too easy for me] ;B[if] ;W[hf] ;B[gh] ;W[ih] (;B[kh]C[only move to have hope, but frankly nothing works.
