Im starting this thread for volunteers. We regularly put in our own time and effort into making this organization better. This is for people who have never volunteered and those that have to see who else is making a difference.

I can only ask that non-volunteers do not post here.

Things I've done for the AGA:

Position: Webmaster since 2007. Upgraded website to remove tables and introduce CSS and flyout menus. setup open aga wiki, http://wiki.usgo.org. Answer tons of emails from people asking questions.

Congress IT: setup broadcasting for EJournal, admin broadcasting games, updating website for different tournaments, finding programmer for tournament crosstabs.

Club wise: run two AGA rated tournaments per year for the Empty Sky Go Club. Bring club equipment to tournaments that need it for their tournaments.

Current projects: migrating aga email from squirrelmail to google apps for non-profits. helping migrate to new online membership database. finding new advertisers and sponsors for the aga.

@Vash: You and I are thinking along the same lines. I already started a forum for volunteers yesterday: viewforum.php?f=51

Does anyone mind if I move this thread there?

Oh, FWIW: I did a bunch of site-hunting for the 2011 Congress.

Oh...uhh...yeah, I guess I did have only that in mind. But it makes sense to make it wider to include all volunteers.

Online playing schedule: Every tenth February 29th from 20:00-20:01 (if time permits)
Over the years I served on two AGA committees (the ratings committee which, about 20 years ago, implemented the first incarnation of the current system, and the ranking committee which, alas, never really produced anything worthwhile); I wrote the first software program that I am aware was ever used by the AGA (back in the 1980s - it used Soundex to find a player in the member database (soundex because of all the different variations of Chinese names) and it is long since obsolete); I have run two clubs; I have run many tournaments; I have taught many players and encouraged many of them to become members. And those are just the things I can remember of the top of my head.

Now I am basically retired from active involvement in the game except for reading this forum and playing on DGS with old friends.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I unlock the door - and otherwise manage our Chapter's weekly meeting. I also keep our club dues current out of pocket.

In a chapter organization, that is probably the most effective (and fun) thing I could be doing in 3-4 hours a week.

Does this count as "volunteering", I don't know, it's a thin line, and murky with semantics.

Oh, also I volunteered for a committee, but they apparently haven't started, got started without me, or whatever.

I doubt I'll be volunteering for the AGA going forward, but in the past I have done a few things:

2008 Chapter Survey. You can see the results at http://www.usgo.org/media/File/2008_03_ ... Report.pdf.

I was National Tournament Coordinator for the AGA over 2008-09, and then took over as VP, Ratings and rebuilt the AGA's rating system after Paul Matthews left.

I made a new sub-forum for non-congress volunteers: viewforum.php?f=52

How about I move this thread there?
