I'll have to find my copy of "Double Elimination Tournaments for Dummies" now... :)

I'm trying to wrap my head around this bracket. For 5A it says it is a Best of 3 yet only 2 games are scheduled. Also, the 2nd game might not be necessary. Examples?

ok, yeah.. I couldn't simplify it enough for the html table, but it should be in the rules pdf that's published on that page.

it all depends on if they've already played each other in previous rounds or not. If so, then those previous games count, and they'd only have to play one or two more.

(but then, someone else just tonight, told me the opposite of my understanding, so I'll have to go back and read the rules again myself.

I'm having trouble getting pictures (suitable for publishing in the AGA E-Journal). I've seen several people taking pictures. If anyone at the event has any to share, send them to journal@usgo.org

Gan pushed Sun low against the edge of the board around move 40 and gained strong influence in return for conceding a few points to Sun. While contemplating the position, Sun was clearly uncomfortable, sinking low into his collar.

Ok, I -think- I've gotten the elimination rules figured out. But does anyone know why:

1. Recorder can't talk to anyone in chat or even read chat

2. No live stream

This is supposed to be AGA premier event, right?

This is a TD requirement. He's trying to avoid even the appearance of possible outside influences.

The AGA is technology challenged.

I'm just a caveman. Your world frightens and confuses me.

One of the recorders was talking in chat today, so I guess the rule was lifted or something.

Just the lunch announcement, or were there other comments?

The players chose to play through lunch--there's a very tense situation on the board, with Calvin trying to handle two weak groups.

Looks like Calvin won by 1.5. The game is definitely worth looking at.

Calvin Sun won game 3 of the 3-game match, making him the winner of the main bracket. He has no losses. It is a double elimination tournament, so he has to lose twice to lose it.

Bill Lin lost one game early in the tounament ( to Sun ), and thereby got knocked into the lower bracket. He won that bracket, so now he is the last man standing to challenge Sun. He is out if he loses again.

In summary, Sun has to win one, Lin has to win two. ( Each meeting between them is best 3 of 5, I think )

I believe it is technically a best of 3, with Calvin having one win so far (the first part of what you say is accurate, the second part is not). In this case, those are equivalent, but had they played a best of three, with Calvin previously winning two games, it would be a best of five with Calvin having a 2-0 lead, and that would give him an even bigger advantage.
