I'll gladly take Kirby's challenge.

We never said anything about the books. I'm currently going through 38 basic Joseki(and I would like to keep doing that), so make of that what you will and adjust your used ressources accordingly

Anyways, I wish you the best of luck and hope we will have a fun game =)

Gameplan: Don't make any mistakes and crush him

Ok, on a more serious note, this is gonna be difficult. I don't really know too much about Kirby's strength, but if he is 9 ranks stronger then me, 9 stones is hard, since I feel that every rank difference is more valuable than the previous one. But I'll try to not get discouraged, right now I'm ahead, so lets do this!

My tip: for each move, show at least 2 alternatives you considered, and why you rejected them and picked your move. Best of luck!

Good luck!

To be honest, a 9-stone game is going to be tough. I don't know much about this guy, but if he is 8k kgs, 8 stone handicap might be more reasonable.

But I'd like to challenge myself.

This game, I want to win without overplays. It will be hard.

To win a 9 stone game without overplays. This I gotta see.

I heard Takemiya sensei would just play "normal", honte moves even in high handi games, and if the student can win, he's happy for them. :)

I have the same philosophy for a teaching game. Unforced errors are the most important ones to discover. :)

So 3 moves eh? Actually its probably good advice, though here it will be a pretty short consideration, I'm fairly certain that I have the right answer.

- Backing off to O16 is probably fine, though I don't like that move too much, at least in even games. Also it leaves a lot of aji for trouble behind, which I don't wanna give to Kirby unless I have to.

- Q14. Nick Sibicky mentioned this as a fine handicap game move, though I vaguely remember Kageyama rejecting it, because it can make white pretty thick. Kirby will want to fight at some point, no need to help him

- And finally the kick. It was my first instinct and I'm gonna stick with it. If a low approach to the 4-4 is already pincered, kick it.

Kirby seeks to play this without overplaying. A calm style for handicap games can be refreshing for white and quite educational for black. It is my preferred way to play as white in a handicap game.

paK0 has chosen a very standard response, and it is a very good one. Most resources I have seen on handicap go recommend this kick in 9 stone games. The Second Book of Go has a chapter on handicap games and shows this possible result:

From my understanding this result is basically fine for both sides, but I personally dislike this for white. It feels like you are following your opponent, especially the :b6: for :w7: exchange. I have a feeling Kirby will not play this way, but if he wants to play proper, calm moves then this is an option. I am 90% sure that he will at least stand at :w3:. The only other option for normal moves would be a one-point jump to P14. Ignoring a kick would be reckless.

His play is good, and probably what I would play as black. There are a few options I considered here.

First, I could tenuki, and see how he responds in another area of the board. For example, I could approach another corner, or even double approach to try to make things more complicated:

Here, maybe I could aim for something like this:

I could get territory this way, but what value did I get from my approach stones? If I only try to get territory right now, I will lose.

Similarly, I could try another response to the kick:

$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Either way, white looks thin.

So, I will just play a standard response. The approach stones have gotten stronger. There is still an open 3-3 invasion, and I have some flexibility in playing later.

The biggest disadvantage to playing in this common way is that it is common enough that my opponent may know how to respond well since it's common handicap pattern. He must make mistakes for me to win this game...

This was pretty much expected. Standard response, so I'll continue normally as well.

Other candidates were:
O17: Better relationship with K16, but gives white a little more breathing room, I don't think that's good when I'm strong all over.

N17: Even better relationship with K16, but even more breathing room, also rejected. Might give white the option to do something with P16, so even more uncertainty. That being said it seems like the most interesting move to me. If this was a throwaway game on KGS I would probably do this one, but here I'll stick to what I know(if possible^^)

He made a standard response... Which means, I'm still at huge disadvantage. Probably, I should just be patient.

My current plan is to put pressure on the right stone, for example, as follows:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

The idea is not to kill the stone, but to get some sort of profit from attacking, to offset the huge disadvantage I have with 9 stones.
Later, I can invade around the 3-3 if I want, or I can move out my two stones.

My first thought is to approach in the same way, but since he seems to like this kicking, it'd probably go like this:

[go]$$Wc
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . X . . . . . X . . . 5 . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 1 . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 . . |
$$ | . . . X . . . . . X . . . 4 . X . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

That seems OK, too... But I feel it's a little easy for black - he has better profit in the bottom right this way. So I want to play a slightly less common approach move - maybe he'll do something unexpected, which would be cool.

Right now, I am behind, but probably I just have to be patient. He'll have to make a mistake at some point. The question is, will I be able to profit from it enough?

I'll decide on a move tomorrow, but here are some thoughts:

First of all I'm kind of relieved. I expected a move like that, but thought he would jump once more first. Then I would want to protect at M16 and his split would be stronger.

Since the right side is pretty spacious and he can't seal me in with one move I think I can respond in the corner. Usually the simplest way to respond to an approach would be to mirror it on the other side, so N4 in this case is my first instinct. On the other hand, I'm not really sure what that does for me exactly, it doesn't completely lock the bottom while still keeping the corner wide open. Therefore a simple move like O3 or O4 might be in order.

Anyways, even the nerd's gotta go out and socialize every now and then, maybe after some beers and a good nights sleep enlightenment will hit me.

Let's go with this one. Two reasons for that:
1. Its a legitimate enclosure
2. Based on how he played at the top he won't jump, but cap my right middle stone right away. Since this will probably lead to some form of fighting, having a high stone there should help me more than a low one

If Kirby wishes to stick to his plan of avoiding overplays, his options for this next move would be to help either his group on top, his stone on bottom, or play a move that helps both. The moves a-f all come to mind as moves that would prepare to attack the center stone without doing something too rash.

Uberdude's suggestion of :w1: is interesting. The shape would be good for white after a crosscut. I will need to remember this move as an option for my future handicap games.

Another move I have seen, although it is somewhat of a trick move, is to play at the marked point of S10. This threatens to link up white's stones. However, it would be an overplay and therefore would contradict Kirby's strategy for this game.

I thought about it for awhile, and though it's boring, I'll go with the cap anyway. It's kind of like a probe - I want to see what direction he commits do, and then make a better plan from there.

I considered tenuki on the other side of the board, but that seems a bit unorganized.

I also considered this move for awhile:

The idea being that I can try to split black up, and maybe get some sort of attack on these stones, along with his handicap stone.

But it's not too hard for him to turn the attack on me, in which case, the marked stone starts looking attacked rather than attacking:

So there is aji I can play with in that area, but first I want to see what direction he moves toward.

It's really hard game for me right now. 9-stone handicap is hard. But let's keep trying...

As expected. I think there is no alternative to pushing through, trying to live just seems way too submissive.

So I'm 99% certain pushing towards the bottom works. I think the "Learn to play Go" series calls whites formation of O10 and Q7 the "Crippled Horse"(or "The Field", but since they are my opponents stones lets go with the mean term, maybe it demoralizes them. It has weak points at P9 and P8, and P9 looks really juicy, since I won't have to make a cuttable formation. The downside is that it is not much of an attack and my 3-3 there is still open, to the potential for points might not be as big.

P12 looks like the best move (given that it works). White has two stones there(double the prey) and the corner is at least somewhat blocked off. The downside is that it leaves behind a possible cut. This seems like the first real opportunity for me to mess up badly, so I'm gonna read as hard as I can and report back with my findings. )

:b1: has some things going for it. First, it is pushing through the smaller gap. (The smaller the gap you push through, the more you weaken the stones that are separated.) Second, it is a solid shape. That makes it stronger than cuttable shapes. Third, it aims at the single stone at Q-07, which is weaker than the double stone formation.

As against that, it does not quite cut the sector line that it is pushing through, and, as a solid shape, it can easily become heavy against a stronger opponent.

Still, if the play goes as in this diagram, Black should be OK. :)
