I'm going to join in and play against Magicwand. I'm going to play as black.

Good luck and have fun, Magicwand.

I'm going to go with the move above, because I like it for black. If black plays in the third corner, it's possible that we could end up playing a Kobayashi sequence, and I usually like them for black

For example:

[go]$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . 3 , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . 1 . . . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

White, of course, may not play :w2:, and may do something like a pincer. If it's a close pincer, I will probably jump into the 3-3 for more territory.

One other move that I experiment with sometimes is:

[go]$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . , B . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

I see this in a lot of pro games. It works nicely. One possibility is, if white plays in the top left corner next, black can have a nice approach that works well with his bottom right stone:

[go]$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . , 1 . . |
$$ | . . . . . 3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

I like this opening alright, too. I didn't really feel like playing it this time, because I don't feel like getting approached immediately after :b1: in the diagram above. I would be able to take the other corner, yes, but I feel like I have a bit more control of the flow with the chosen move.

Also, white could of course approach my bottom right move:

[go]$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . W . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

but I don't think that it's as good for white as the other diagram, because the marked stone doesn't work as well with the bottom left stone, I think.

There are a couple of options I have here. I could defend the corner with a move like this:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

But as white can jump into the center pretty easily later, I don't think it's making use of my bottom stones as well as I'd like to.

Magicwand is up to something tricky here, but I am not sure what, yet. I haven't seen his response before, and I don't think it's optimal for a couple of reasons.

First, we can try to picture what might happen if the stones were played in a different order, such as here:

$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Let's say that black has just played the marked stone above after a low 3-4 approach by white. It feels quite natural for white to choose something such as the following.

[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 X O . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . X . . . . . , 3 . . |
$$ | . . . . . X . . . . . . . . . X 4 . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

and then white has a few options. Anyway, to me at least, :w1: in the diagram seems quite normal.

Now let's say that white deviates from this:

[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . b 1 . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . X . . . . . , a . . |
$$ | . . . . . X . . . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

If white plays as is indicated above, black has a couple of options. He may care about protecting the corner at a, or he may care about building up influence with b, for example. Going along with my original intent of playing Q5 in the game, in such a scenario, I might choose to play b. So the board would look as follows:

Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . X . . . . . , . c . |
$$ | . . . . . X . . . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Now it's white's turn. Does "c" look like the most efficient move for white to make? I may be mistaken, but it doesn't seem that efficient to me. Therefore, I think that there is a mistake with white's move... However, I have to be careful not to play stupidly or I could end up in an even worse position.

Strategy
So first of all, I want to think of what my intent is. One thing that would be kind of cool is if I could get a moyo at the bottom. Ideally, if I could have something like this, I'd be pretty happy:
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . B . . . |
$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . . . B . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . X . . . . . , . O . |
$$ | . . . . . X . d . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Of course, this means that I'd be playing two moves in a row, so it makes sense that it looks good to me :)

So in a perfect world, I want to do something on the right side so that I can keep black influence toward the bottom, and then get the opportunity to play at F5, as in the picture above. I think that'd be pretty groovy... But at any point, Magicwand may choose to invade at a place like d above. Which may be fine, but it would mean that I have to change my plans a bit.

So I can't be too set on getting F5 as in the picture above, because I have to be flexible to how white responds. So ideally, I want a move that gives me several options. If I just play as below, it doesn't really put much additional pressure on white:

[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . B . . . |
$$ | . . O . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . |
$$ | . . . O . . . . . X . . . . . , . O . |
$$ | . . . . . X . d . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

It still looks like white can live even if he tenukis, so it's a little easy on white, I think. White can make a plan to try to reduce what I've got going on the bottom, or maybe come up with a different idea. So the move above is somewhat effective in terms of generating influence, I'm not sure if I like it that much.

Since I was kind of big on F5 from before, I might consider playing it immediately. The problem with this is that I don't feel like my side stones are in the best of shape, and black can hane at the head of my two stones without my getting much compensation, following up with x or y to get some nice potential on the right side:

$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

So then I can think about what would have been a normal response for white. As they say, "your opponent's best move is your best move".

If I were white, it might be natural to play as follows:

[go]$$Wcm1
$$ ---------------------------------------
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . , . . . . . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . W . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

This keeps white from running from behind, and secures the stones nicely. Also, thinking of the stones in a different order as before yields:

Which seems rather natural.

So what happens if I steal that spot from him? It might turn out alright, I think. If white simply defends on the second line:

White may still be able to get sente, and may get to invade later at "d" like I was worried about before. But I think that the influence I generate by running along the third line is pretty big! Furthermore, white is only getting one point each time he runs along the second line. It seems like it has to be pretty good for me!

So maybe white will do something like cutting:

I feel a little queazy about something like the sequence above. So maybe my response to the cut isn't the best. Perhaps I can do as follows:

Here, I'm not really sure about what to do for white. The cutting stone can become a target for me, particularly because of my power on the bottom. The white stones on the right are also not quite out of the woods, since I can put pressure on killing them later... I don't know what I would do as white next.

So I feel pretty comfortable with the marked move above. I think that it would at least make me a bit uncomfortable as white.

Let's hope that Magicwand feels the same way.

White has obvious bad shape, but Black has cutting points, and his stones on the right are not exactly strong. :b2: may be good, but Black has a obvious alternative.

below is what i expect. yes white has lost some points in below variation.
if it was a stronger or equal strength player i would never play as below.
but i think i am stronger than he is so losing some points here will not decide the outcome of the game.
if i dont want to lose points in this variation i have to cut .. but i am not sure if that will give me better result. and it is very risky ..
i shouldn't have played joseki that i didnt like.
i think i lost about 5 points. :(

I like the actual game for black better than this variation, so I'm kind of happy right now. I guess I might not have sente to play 9 this way, but I think it's worth it considering the low amount of territory white is getting on the side.

Also, in the diagram above, white could still tenuki at some point and prevent me from playing 9, anyway... So I'm OK with it.

Lol @ magicwand in malkovitch games. He posts like no comments, seems ok with losing points all over the place, but still wins the game

Magicwand doesn't really understand the purpose of Malkovich games, he just plays them as if they were forum turn-based games. There are at times moves he makes that have a lot of meaning behind them, but he doesn't bother to write more than a few sentences, if a sentence at all. Mind you, some people will still learn from his posts, but I just wish sometimes he would put even a bit more effort into writing his thoughts.

I'm starting to be a bit worried about a white invasion around H3. I don't really know the best way to deal with it right now. I thought about tenuki-ing, but letting white get the point marked above seems just too good for him. For example:

I'm not sure about the exact sequence... Maybe :b3: is bad shape, and maybe white would play a bit differently... But I just really don't like this way of playing. Yes, the bottom area has some nice potential like this, but white gets more control on the right side than I want him to.

I want his right group to remain small.

And, playing the move I've chosen works well with the black top right star point. I think that it's too big to tenuki right now. I want to tenuki and play something like :b1: in the diagram above, but I don't think I have time to do so, because of the possibilities that it brings to white.

My goal is to deal with an invasion on the bottom when Magicwand takes sente (I think he'll probably invade) keeping two things in mind:

1.) Make the best use of my potential on the bottom as possible.
2.) I want to get sente if possible so that I can approach his top left corner before he does something at the top.

It might be tricky to meet both of these objectives, but I am going to try... This is assuming that Magicwand decides to invade on the next move. He might play something different, but since the invasion is what I'm concerned about the most, I can come up with a new plan if he plays elsewhere. He may approach the top right stone. I'm OK with that, too.
