Part 1 (The Life) of a trilogy "The Life, Games and Commentaries of Honinbo Shuei" was published in May 2012. The first volume of Part 2, devoted to commentaries on his games, was published in June 2012. The second and third volumes followed soon after. This final volume (November 2012) brings the total number of Shuei's games commented on to 79, almost a third of his total games. As usual, the commentaries on the eighteen games presented here are a composite based on many professional commentaries collected by the author.
Volume 4 covers the period between from 1900 to his death, and so represents his final legacy. Several of his finest games are here. We see again mainly Tamura Yasuhisa (Honinbo Shusai) and his rival Karigane Junichi jousting with Shuei for supremacy as his top pupil.
Shuei was perhaps the first player to make use of psychology, probably because he spent his latter years exclusively in teaching games, and this is seen in several games here. For Hikaru fans, there is also a genuine example here of how a game is fixed to end in a 1-point loss.
But the aim of the four volumes as a whole has been to show the elicit the elements of Shuei's much priased style and to show how it evolved. Volume 4 is the acme.
The price for Volume 4 is US$9.99.
Part 3 of the trilogy, forthcoming, is devoted to commentaries by Shuei on games by his pupils.
