There's two other Malkovich games I'm in, but Gus and I talked on SC2 and he lost interest in the whole Malkovich business and the game w/ Joaz just wilted away. I also felt a bit too much pressure in that game to write a lot/videoblog so it was more work than fun. Anyways, new beginnings. Will try not to make SC2 references; memes are fair game though.

I look forward to seeing how solch will play against Mwand.

I know my games with Araban just look like big blobs of murder.

Should be a fun time.

It's my favorite opening. Unfortunately I can't really explain to you why it is an opening I enjoy so much, you'd be better off asking me why my favorite color is blue, or why my favorite Go vocabulary is tewari. You may be thinking "but your opening is flatter than a flitter", and you'd be thinking right so I'd just put on my poker face.

And oh it's also the same opening I used against Magicwand in the L19 tourney.

what i noticed about sol:
he is strong but lacks experience. i think i have upper hand in complicated fighting.
i will start slow and maintain my komi. soon as i have chance i will start fighting.
that is my gameplan.

i always start two star point when i play white.
i really dont care how he start the beginning. i will lay low till i get my chance.

In his recent writings Go Seigen disapproves of :w2:, because it allows the opposing 3-4 with :b3:.

:b3: is questionable, as it invites an approach that works well with White's stone in the bottom left corner. However, as I recall, Kitani played this way against Go Seigen, and Kitani was no slouch.

For White's next play I predict one of the :w4: points.

Edit: That's one for me. ;)

Bill, I think there almost no need to hide our comments,
as both players know this theory
and also will know that Go Seigen and Kitani knew.

I prefer lighter, more efficiency play than solid territorial play. Went over a lot of games from Cho Hunhyun in 2008 which probably influenced my mindset. Q10 is also possible but I don't like investing 3 moves on the side like that so early in the game...you can probably guess which popular opening I'm not a fan of. I heard Go Seigen also doesn't like it either!

I like being all over the place at once. I could play L17 to form the mini-Chinese formation on top, but I'll be honest I really only play the mini-Chinese because it looks cool, not because I know it very well. I know the basic, dumbed down theory behind it (thanks senseis) but that's about it.

I'm probably DDK when it comes to opening theory; it's because I hold little regard to it and if so many people didn't feel so flustered about it I'd probably pull a Gan Shiyang or 'sum' in most of my games.

Anyways, depending on how he responds I may still play the mini-Chinese later on because...yeah, coolness.

i will try something new. hopefully this will give him some discomfort.
i think i am strong enough to invent my own joseky.

main reason why i played this move:
1. i dont want him to feel comfortable. if i answer simple knight move then i am following his lead.
2. his inexperience will give me edge when we are fighting unfamiliar battle.
3. i love trying something new. and i think it is good move.

Big fan of magicwand's move.

Also, he just gave me the best example ever for showing off my website.

Check out the move he just played: http://dailyjoseki.com/browse/bwpwxibvt

As you can see, pros almost never play it without having all three star points.

I gather that it's probably not appropriate on this board. But can Araban punish it? I sure don't know how...

Magicwand will want C10 to finish the upper left joseki anyway, right?

Yes, but black knows this just as well as white. Since it's black's turn, he has the opportunity to mess up white's plans by preventing white from making the formation that he wants, or playing a move that makes that formation poor.

This doesn't actually mean that he has to try hard to do this, he might pursue his own plan that he feels counters white, but the situation is not so simple as to give white what he wants easily.

IMO, any of these :w8: plays are too passive, too concentrated on the left side. I lean towards a pincer myself, such as "a".

Expanding the search slightly, with a black stone anywhere in both of the marked regions, white plays:
a: 5 times
b: 3 times
c: 1 time
d: 1 time

When you say "pros" - with this move you mostly mean "Takemiya." Although it looks like Park Jie-un and Yamashita Keigo have experimented with it some too, and it shows up (in my ragtag database) isolatedly a few times by Kong Jie, Chang Hao, etc. But yeah, I'm pretty sure it's famous as being an invention of Takemiya specifically for the sanrensei.

And geez, I have a lot of dupes. Four of my results for this search are the same game between Daniel Chou and Gary Shen at the 2008 U.S. Go Congress. Need to organize...

Ooooh, this game is interesting - Fujisawa Shuko played it as WHITE... in a very very different situation than usual. Black was Yoda Norimoto, the year was 1992.

Hey, does dailyjoseki.com make any assumptions about order of play or anything? If I pass, then put in the upper left position above, the results make it obvious that this game isn't included among them. I find it hard to believe I have a pro game record SO RARE that GoGod doesn't have it...

dailyjoseki.com is insensitive to color; if you put in the position with colors swapped it will show you the same results, just with the colors swapped. IOW, all positions are properly rotated, mirrored, and color-swapped before being aggregated. I haven't checked, but I'd be astonished if the game you post wasn't included among them, it would be one of the examples keeping the star point stones from being completely opaque...

Color insensitive, according to the latest edition of GoGoD, 76% of the time a player plays this kosumi he has a stone at :ex:.

And yes, GoGoD has ethanb's game between Yoda and Fujisawa.
