This one almost slipped past me. Today (9/4) Sugiuchi Masao 9p will square off against Fujimura Yosuke 2p in the B preliminary of the Oza. Sugiuchi (DOB 1920-10-20) is 74 years 6 months older than Fujimura (DOB 1995-4-13). Best of luck to Sugiuchi-sensei, who (AFAIK) is still chasing that first 70+ age difference victory! I guess I should add that wife Kazuko 8p (DOB 1927-3-6) is taking it relatively easy today in the Judan C preliminary with a game against Horimoto Mitsunari 3p (DOB 1989-10-23) a mere 62 years 7 months her junior! ![]() |

Unfortunately once again experience did not prevail over youthful energy. The Sugiuchi family did not manage to pick up a win despite being a combined 137 years older than their two opponents. We'll keep watching! |

Today Sugiuchi Masao, who will celebrate his 94th birthday on Monday (10/20), squares off against Kazama Jun 2p, DOB 1991-2-2, 70 years and 3 months his junior. They meet in the preliminaries of the Judan-sen. Here's hoping that Sugiuchi-sensei wins and finally cracks the 70+ year barrier. He deserves an early birthday present! ![]() |

Imagine a Go Seigen match against Sugiuchi Masao as his birthday present. Then he would be the youngster. |

Sad to say, youth triumphed once again Kazama 1 - Sugiuchi 0. So there is no special birthday present this year. Oh well, we'll have to see whether Sugiuchi-sensei can turn the trick at age 94! |

Yessss!!! ![]() The tables for the preliminary tournament for the 40th Kisei appeared this week and what should we find in group 5?... So what happens is Shibano Toramaru 1p (芝野 虎丸, DOB 1999/11/9) and Sotoyanagi Sebun 1p (外柳 是聞, DOB 1994/12/23) square off to get things rolling. The winner then plays Sugiuchi Masao (DOB 1920-10-20). Naturally I am hoping for Shibano to win so that we get a match up with an age difference of a whopping 79 years and 20 days. With Sotoyanagi we have to settle for a mere 74 years and 2 months. Where's the fun in that! ![]() Unfortunately mamumamu0413's ratings site gives Sugiuchi-sensei only a 23% probability of beating Shibano and 20% of beating Sotoyanagi, but we'll hope for the best! No dates have been announced yet. |

In December Sotoyanagi beat Shibano so we will watch for the Sugiuchi-Sotoyanagi match up real soon now. Meanwhile, however, Sugiuchi-sensei will square off against Tsuneishi Takashi 2p in the Gosei preliminaries today (1/8). By now this is an almost 'normal' 70-year gap as Tsuneishi was born in 1991. |

He is listed as 5 wins and 6 losses in 2014 on mamumamu0413's ratings site. |

Hmmm... I am starting to think that there may be something to this "watched pot never..." stuff. ![]() There is no joy in Tokyo this week as Tsuneishi advances in the Gosei. |

I think it probably has more to do with a "watched 94 year old". |

DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() Yesterday (1/15) Sugiuchi 9p (DOB 1920-10-20) and Sotoyanagi 1p (DOB 1994-12-23) squared off in the Kisei preliminaries. The result: Sugiuchi 1 - Sotoyanagi 0. AFAIK this is the first time a professional has beaten another pro more than 70 years his/her junior. Well done Sugiuchi-sensei! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

News of Sugiuchi Kazuko - at age of 87 she beat three opponents in a row in the preliminary tournament of 34th Female Honinbo. Her latest victory was earlier today against rather strong Kato Keiko. |

Yesterday Sugiuchi Masao beat Ko Mosei 9p in the Kisei qualifier. It was nothing special in age terms since Ko is a mere 38 years junior. However if Sugiuchi wins one more game, he will qualify for the inaugural C league under the new format at the age of 94! ![]() |

Yesterday, 2/26, Sugiuchi Masao beat Takahashi Hideo in the Meijin preliminaries. This gives him a 4-1 start in 2015 AFAIK. Since opening with a loss to Tsuneishi Takashi in the Gosei, he has beaten Sotoyanagi Sebun (Kisei), Ko Mosei (Kisei), Matsubara Taisei (Honinbo), and now Takahashi. Not bad for a 94 year old! ![]() |
