Don't know how many have seen it already. Could be interesting for those looking for a bot to play on their tablet.

Pachi by Petr Baudis has been ported to Android by Emmanuel Mathis, the creator of the very nice ElyGo Android app.

The APK can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/android-pachi/files/

I installed v5 and it seems to work fine on my Acer A510 (Tegra3 at 1.3GHz).

Anyone else want to try it and give an assessment of its strength on their particular hardware?

No reports back yet?

I would be extremely interested whether Pachi (or any other MCTS program) would work well at realistic playing speed on such relatively weak hardware.

Two games for you Mike:

I played Pachi vs Crazy Stone 2012. Crazy Stone took Black and was running on a 3.3 GHz i5 with 8GB of RAM, Pachi took White and was running on a Samsung Galaxy S3. Pachi ran at L10 the maximum strength setting, Crazy Stone ran at Lvl 1 and Lvl 5 where Lvl 10 is the maximum. Komi was 6.5. I didn't have the patience to do more than 9x9, Pachi at L10 takes a good 30-45 seconds a move on my phone. Crazy Stone was responding instantly on both settings. I was going to do a Level 10 test but it lost so badly versus Level 5 that I didn't bother.

Against Level 1:

Against Level 5:

I tried it back in April and it had some issues, but the thread was never posted in again. Nice to hear it's been updated since. I will give it a try when I have time.

Ok I tried it on 13x13 against Crazy Stone Level 10. I wasn't particularly impressed by pachi's local reading (it had next to no chance here but I felt some of its moves were not just strange but bad). Its fuseki was somewhat strange. I think it's quite limited by the phone hardware. Crazy Stone started playing some odd moves once it had no chance of losing, as usual.

Hi all,

I'm the author of the app. I tried some settings with this new version but Pachi is much weaker than in the first release (where it was probably around 4-5 dan on 9x9, on my old Galaxy S). I'm really surprised because these settings should allow pachi to manage its time more efficiently, but in fact it plays weird fusekis and make many mistakes during the endgame.

If you would like to test its strength I would suggest using the oldest release (pachi-2.apk here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/android-pachi/files/?source=navbar) although there were some bugs and no undo.

I'm working on a new version with much better settings. It will be available soon (probably on Google Play this time).

Cool, retried it against Lvl 5 on 9x9. It did not look at all like 4-5 dan and the SIII's processor is substantially more powerful than the Galaxy S'.

Actually, I just tested Pachi 10 for desktop against Crazy Stone L5 on 9x9, running both on my desktop and Pachi lost quite badly. I don't think it's a problem with your implementation on Android or the hardware here.

Pachi is now available on Google Play !

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... roid.pachi

I will add features over time, especially an SGF editor to review the games saved. Let me know if you have other ideas :)

I guess that it's expected considering the limited hardware, and that the app can't use more than half of the memory available (else android kills it). It also doesn't support multi-core processors.

If you are interested, I will test Pachi's strength on KGS with the account "PachiDroid". It will play from my phone with custom settings (should be stronger than lvl 10).

That would be very interesting, thank you. :)

The only one I could find on Google Play was a Beta version. Is that the correct one?

It doesn't seem to have any main menu. So I don't know how to exit the app, or start a new game. It seems I can only start a new game by restarting the app?

It won't save a game. It claims my SD card is read only. I don't see how that would be true (nor would I know how to change it if it were).

I have the same issue with scoring at the end of the game that Inkwolf reported in the other thread (she mentioned above)

I wish the bottom of your board had a little more border on them. Its difficult to place a stone on the edge when using the offset mode.

I'm running Andriod 2.2.2 on a SGH-T499

Thanks for porting this program to Andriod.
