Joseki Question

This position came up in a recent game (didn't progress beyond this point) and I was wondering if the double hane at 7 is an overplay. Kogo's says 4 is a mistake, but doesn't have any variations like this.

Elementary go series

So I'm only 3k, but every time I come back to these books I feel like I'm reading something completely new. Do these books ever lose their benefit? At what rank would someone have a exhausted them? Have you?

Re: A friend's dream

All I have is my brain treating go like white noise before I fall asleep, nonsensical positions that I keep reading randomly till I finally sleep.

cgoban on mac issues

There are a few kinks with cgoban on my mac (running OS 10.5.8) and i was ondering if I was missing any easy solutions.

Copy and paste do not seem to work in the chat (I'm guessing because Command+c hot key is non existent on PCs)

Game window scales awkwardly, the game and chat are split 50/50 no ...

Re: Tips for self-analysis?

Just a small tip, when reviewing by yourself it's easy to get into a click frenzy, and do all let an sgf editor do all your reading for you. My experience is that my best reviews are situational. I think it is more beneficial to review only area of the game where you feel you faltered at a time ...

Re: Mnemonics go experience

No worries, we all malfunction like this from time to time. In my experience, shortage of liberties is one of the hardest things in go to read, I always seems to lose a stone here or there in longer problems :)

Re: Andd Pre-New Years Resolution

I'm treating the gokyu shumyo as my set of tsumego that I can't solve yet but attempting them anyway as a practice in reading deapth and focus. I have no illusions of solving them completely for a long time.

Re: How do you want moderating done?

Just an idea, I like the idea of encouraging self moderation, so I think a PM from a moderator to give the offender a chance to edit their own text and take the high road. If they are obstinate the post is then outright deleted. This gives a chance for those who may have suffered a momentary lapse ...

Re: Choosing ko: How big is too big?

Evaluating the value of a ko is very difficult though I think it comes down this question, is avoiding the ko a smaller loss then ignoring your opponent's last ko threat. This is a difficult question to answer in most ko situations involving life and death, and endgame situations, but the opposite ...

Re: Andd Pre-New Years Resolution

Sunday was the Massachusetts Go Association Winter Go Tourney. I entered as 4k and went 0-4. After a day in a slump, I believe that I've finally narrowed in on the soft point of my go. My reading is incredibly sloppy. I can manage to fight pretty well since my intuition of shape is usually better ...

Re: Yutopian or Slate & Shell

I have dealt only with Slate and Shell's and Kiseido's customer service people. I have nothing but pleasant things to say about either company. Maybe you caught someone on a bad day, but from my experience go book publishers care alot about customer satisfaction since the community is so small ...

Effecient Study question

One of the holes I've started to notice in my game is my inability to play severly enough against overplays (most often invasions). I have an easy enough time identifying the moves but I often am too soft on the reply, and then my position collapses. Besides just playing and reviewing the games, is ...
