Re: Why do people still use the Chinese when it's clearly ba

The main disadvantage of Chinese rules is that counting the score is more difficult. In my experience, this occurs in 100% games that are played over the board and not ended by resignation.

The main disadvantage of Japanese rules is that they do a poor job of handling life and death disputes at ...

Most important comment is Bill's on move 52.

Edit: removed uncertain comment.

Re: Another one bites the dust

The sequence 30-32-34 feels pretty optimistic. If black plays 35 at G7, white seems likely to be swallowed whole.

Re: Game review after a convincing win.

Thanks for the review.

I have a question: white 42 for me is somewhat obliged (but since i'm a beginner i think i'm wrong). If my opponent plays there I think my position is mess up. I tought that was a needed defensive move against invasions. Is it too slow?

At my 82 move my plan was to steal ...

Re: My first two ko threats. Game analysis

18: must play P17 to break black's connection. Cutting and connecting is fundamental.
58: must play N9
64 and 70: these moves only provoke black to push through the gap which is good for him. This is called "toothpaste technique" and is not good. Both times, turning at J11 is better.
77: another ...

Re: Game review after a convincing win.

Just a few quickies:

14, 22, 24: too small for the opening.
49: yes, a terrible move by black.
64: very bad shape. If you feel you need to add a defensive move here, play something that is also productive, such as N7 or M4.
86: very small. I don't know the very best move, but things like G2, R14 ...

I suspect this is a pro game.

A friend and I met over the holiday weekend and played through a game.

Choosing your words carefully lol

Re: bad plan and bad loss

All previous comments helpful of course.

One other thing I like to emphasize with learners is to reduce the number of useless moves. It is one thing to make moves that are not best, and entirely another to make moves that do nothing at all, or virtually nothing.

In this game, look at 35, 57, 69 ...

Yes, of course you are all correct, there must be photos. I will try to post some when I get a chance. We have been very busy lately.

Re: might sell a nice set, checking interest

I can take some photos and post them, when I get a chance. Was starting by just checking to see if this sort of thing had any demand. Are you at all interested, or just curious?

might sell a nice set, checking interest

I rarely play face to face anymore, and have a surplus of equipment. I am thinking about selling a nice set I never use anymore. 8.4 mm slate and shell, cherry bowls, and a 2 inch katsura table board (this one virtually unused).

Wondering if this would draw any interest.

Re: Canadian Go League game (a.k.a Losing a won game)

19: Perhaps C15 followed by C16. Still gote but gains a point or two profit and creates a cutting point.

49: you killed the corner, it's ok. P17 would allow white Q11 or such and the thickness is a little less effective. Still a good result though

61: O12 is also good but I don't think the game ...

Re: Number of wrong moves

I think it would be more useful to count bad ideas instead of bad moves. A bad idea might show up as one bad move. It might also show up as a sequence of moves that is self-consistent and locally good, but the wrong direction; or an attempted tsumego sequence that doesn't work. Does that make the ...

Re: Losing a won game

Regarding 18:

So early in a high handicap game, there are many moves that lead to a forced win, and 18 is certainly one of them. You could also choose to continue attacking (perhaps 18 at H17?) but this is more a matter of style in my opinion. I think 18 is fine.

However I do think that 16 is not ...
