Re: Java client inoperable

I don't like Java Web Start at all. Both Cgoban3 and GoPanda (from IGS) use Java Web Start. Why can't the KGS client be distributed as a jar-in-a-zip-file or installer file or something?
Because jar can't update itself and people could have trouble with running jar files probably.
You can download ...

Re: A beginner's journal of little interest

My try at reviewing your last game. I think that your fuseki is fine, trying to spot big moves is reasonable although you could work on it a bit. Especially try to focus on not doing "passing moves" and playing more games/doing tsumegos so that your reading ability improves a bit. But you are very ...

Re: KGS Sound Issues in Ubuntu

I don't use pulseaudio at all. Earlier (when I was using 64bit Java 6 from Sun I think) I had issues with KGS locking audio driver for itself, but apart from that, sound was working. Right now I'm using 64bit icedtea 7 and there are no OSS/alsa driver issues… but placing stone sound and byo-yomi ...

Re: Why do some players have several thousand wins and losse

It's possible that these accounts are used in asian go clubs. In club there are computers which are permanently logged in on IGS/Tygem/Wbaduk server, so anyone can come and play a game.

Re: How do you know when not to invade?

OK, but if I wouldn't agree as white, I mean if I insist on "you cannot kill me" (even if I know better) we have to play it out. Then black will kill white, but to achieve this, he needs to play inside his territory. And with japanese rules, he loses points then! Is that right?

Re: How do you know when not to invade?

Simple question: Why on't I put a white stone into the black territory, so that it decreases from 18 to 17? If black wants to catch me, he has to put 4 stones around it and therefore loses four points.

It depends on a ruleset a bit (with chinese rules you don't lose points by playing inside ...

Re: Is there a way to become good without playing?

Battousai mentioned that his friend didn't play for some time and then jumped by about 10 ranks to dan ranks by memorizing and reviewing professional games. Maybe it's the same person as Magicwand metioned? And Bat himself got from around 10k to 1d by memorizing pro games only. But he doesn't ...

Re: can we get rid of the insane admins please?

There is a big difference between a regular member offending an admin who asked not to be offended and an admin being sarcastic to a member who asked not to be sarcastic with.

Normally when an admin is already annoyed by someone else, it's not wise to continue annoying the admin even if you were ...

Re: Attacking/Defending/Tactics training

I don't really like solving tsumegos myself, so I will recommend other things. Learn about efficiency of shapes, dsaun on KGS has sometimes nice lecture about them. Or start with m
Learn about how to achieve maximum with as few stones as possible. Also learn when to attack and when to defend. I ...

Re: Prevent escapers from starting new games

My two games have an impact spread over perhaps 20,000 players or however many have an active rating on KGS. That's a player impacted by player ratio of 1:10,000. The one person making an accusation on me has a 1:1 impact, and is directed confrontationally at me, rather than happening outside of my ...

Re: Prevent escapers from starting new games

If my opponent is being incredibly rude during a game, I may well resign just because I don't want to be playing him.
Censoring isn't enough, I don't actually want to be playing with someone who's being incredibly unpleasant.
That's also against TOS, but I'd do it in real life too.

According ...

For someone it is for someone it isn't.

Also to appreciate Bat's lectures you have to be at least SDK. If someone enjoys reading books, why shouldn't he.
