Cheers, it does appear to be down just for me. Weird, maybe it's blocked by the network I'm on :\

Re: Best version of linux?
I am going to try to demo ubuntu and gentoo and see which I may like better.
Quick question though. The ubuntu info says you can install it on the same partition as windows, but it might slightly reduce disk performance. Any idea if the disk performance reduction is really an issue? Also, does ...

25, and I feel like 40 when I just wake up, 20 after a nice cup of tea, then gradually normalising to my actual age throughout the day unless I have an intake of sugary things or chocolately goodness

Re: Study Focus
I'm working on openings at the moment and studying some joseki. Trying not to think too much about global strategy just yet since I read somewhere that DDKs generally don't have to worry about that until they reach SDK level (is this true-ish?)

Re: A problem with a student
He doesn't care. We've been going to the same school for years so I know this person in real life pretty well, so I know what he wouldn't mind. Heck, he may even like the range of opponents here on GD. I'm not really complaining; just asking for ways to deal with the problem. I'm new to teaching ...

Re: Book recommendations? (sci-fi or fantasy)
I like some of David Edding's work. I think the first series is called the The Belgariad. Its fantasy. It doesn't feel quite like Tolkien to me, although like you said, a lot of fantasy rolls down that hill. It does share some of the same ideas.

Re: Using the iPad for study
iPad does seem quite good for go related stuff, alas I can't afford one right now
Is it possible to take some pics of the iPad in action? Also, is there sound when you place a stone on the SmartGo Kifu?

Re: GnuGo
I've recently got a bot running on KGS to see how it did, running GnuGo 3.8 - its playing strength from the games it has played so far puts it in the range of 5-10k at the moment.
When I tried that, I got outplayed all the time, so that's why I discovered that it is weak at moyos. I'd like to ...

I usually play a 4-4 followed by a 3-4, whether I have Black or White.

Re: How much do you study go each day?
I don't study that much, my day ends with me logging onto KGS in the evening and watching/playing some games or just replaying pro games and some reading. I try to do a few tsumego problems before I sleep, but I would say that in a day I only study for about an hour or so.

Re: When did you hit plateaus?
When I first started playing it took me a while and many games to improve past 20k. I'm around 15k right now, but playing some people who are about 14k or 13k I'm finding that they way I currently play just isn't good enough. I think I may be in another plateau : I do tsumego, replay pro games and ...
