Perhaps people play harder than usual because they think the wood will be more resistant to damage? I could see that as a potential cause of more injuries. I have a hard time believing that harder gobans lead to damage of phalanges or phalangeal joints.

Something about the idea that a harder goban leads to more finger injuries seems pretty silly. I'm fairly certain that the difference in hardness isn't what would cause the injuries as much as how hard someone is slamming pieces on the board. I had a friend over who plays go and we played a few dozen games on my board and he pointed out some small cracks in between a couple slats and when I looked today on the other side there is a crack between the seams of one of the bamboo slats. The only difference should be our bowls correct? Do you have any pictures of your bowls? I washed and oiled my stones, but our stones shouldn't look appreciably different.

The picture of the bowls is much different than the bowls I received. The bowls I received also had a diamond shaped Yunnan Weiqi Factory sticker on the bottom of the lid which makes me think they're cheaper ...
