Re: unsolvable (math) problem for a whole year, help me!
The new statement is not equivalent to the original one. The point there is that in the transformed inequalities the bounds depend on the term between them. After you say x = alpha+beta, you should only leave one other independent variable, traditionally y=alpha-beta, but any other combination (e.g ...

Re: Samsung cup main tournament starts.
Several long technical digressions could happen here. I was simplifying, but actually I also think that what I said is technically true if you think about distributions of strength, rather than just "how strong the Japanese are". I agree and suspect we would have the same opinion on any specific ...

Re: Samsung cup main tournament starts.
To clear up some confusion among discussion;
In Samsung Cup preliminary tournament, there were 28 players from Japan participating. And only 2 players passed and joined main tournament.
Far from clarifying, it seems confusing: there were >60 players from china and >110 from Korea. While I can ...

You can see thunderbird from mozilla as an example of a java client that lost badly to online email clients.
Since Mozilla Thunderbird is not a java client (nor are most IGS clients, nor WBaduk or Tygem as far as I can tell) I wonder what you are calling "java"...
Sorry i meant desktop client ...

Re: What is the Best Way to Unstick your KGS rating?
If all even or properly handicapped, then your probability of winning hasn't changed. If you flip a coin 13 time and get 12 heads, the probability of getting a head on the next flip is still only 50%.
But that is not at all the situation. The system does not know this probability, no one knows ...

Re: EGC Drama
Its possible that Alexander was unaware of how illegal moves are handled according to EGF Tournamentrules. As he stated on gosensations.com in asia an illegal move equals a forfeit.
It does not seem actually true. According to what I read on SL at least in China the illegal move would have been ...

Re: connectedness and cutting over influence
generally speaking, the games you lost should be good examples of why you should care about cuts.
It comes down to life and death, in a pinch. If your groups are separated they have to make life separately, which means losing territory to make eyes, and building a new border. Being cut or invaded ...

I cannot be sure about the opening, but a couple of hints. What about 101 at f2? There are several ways to kill q2, but after 110 something in your head should scream "P1!!!" Even more so after 112...

Robert doesn't understand what 'understand' means and he doesn't even use the word right either!
Let us learn from you when you provide better explanations of "understanding"!
I am just a new comer to this forum, but from what I see (and if the same rules apply to you both) he can just keep ...

Re: Computers reach 5d on KGS
Actually, I was hinting that they probably don't exist in the way people think they do. At the heart of it, it is pure reading.
With this I agree 100%. I said it badly, but what I mean is that the only objective way to say that a play is correct is to read until the end of the game and confirm ...

Re: Computers reach 5d on KGS
The issue is that because human understanding of language is recursive, and current techniques for machine translation aren't, the computer can never match the human's competence.
Wow, I would never make that bet... Maybe I will not see it in my life (and I would be very sad of that) but from ...

Show me where there are computers that understand what words mean. Where are there even computers that understand syntax for natural language?
