For your first variation, did you consider White playing like this :

So, what's the definition of a ponnuki? Because if a word is used to convey precise information, it should have a precise meaning.

But beauty is not the only factor - and I'm certain "coolness" would not be a factor at all. Associations, practicality and the local environment are among other characteristics that influenced decisions.

The concept is not entirely absent in Chess. Double check, discovered attack, which is an application of pinning, ... these are elementary tactics which apply pressure without an immediate aim for check mate.

@Telegraph : another kind of music (Jazz), but Joey Alexander was absolutely mindblowing.
He was 12 year old here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpwmTGUflUM
And this is Jazz music : there's no "following a partition with all the notes", instead that's a dialogue between all the musicians

And the setting for the game with go's most ancient title reflected that. I think it was the first title match ever in Yamaguchi, but they were there because they were NOT celebrating some new-fangled wizardry. Instead the setting was the sexcentenary of local boy Sesshu Toyo - that's Battle of ...

Re: Martian problem
ok but the question is, what would be a different first move territory versus area?
With the seki variation Black has 10 points and White 12 points under area scoring, so the score is W+2. But Black will rather play another move, either A3 or E1 :
$$Bc

basek.sgf
i only see a3 as an option for blacks first move no matter the rule set.
You missed that this situation is in fact a seki, black will not play A3 but pass instead :
$$Bc :b3: pass, :b5: pass, :w6: pass

$$ | O O O . 1 -

Re: AI opinions on "fairest" komi by board size
Evidence is mounting that 7.5 komi, as commonly used with Chinese rules (and AGA rules), is too much.
Does anyone know if there are plans in China or the US to lower the komi to 6.5?
With area scoring rules, you have 361 pts to share, so if there's no seki, the score difference on the board is ...

Re: What is the theoretical value of the first move of a gam
In addition if black plays "b" it seems that the evaluation of the position greatly change (at least half the value of the corner ?) as well as the temperature (great increase) though for the players it may look only as a "simple" sente move played without the feeling that the temperature grows. On ...

Re: What is the theoretical value of the first move of a gam
I don't think temperature has anything to do with the amount of uncertainty/choice in a position.
In both of your diagrams, black playing at b after a greatly increase the local temperature : white is more likely to play a move in the area than before black play at b
