Re: Using joseki dictionary in games

I've always used a joseki dictionary while playing. Nowadays, I rarely need it anymore. I think it has helped me to learn faster by allowing me to play above my level and to make sure I don't get stuck playing the same basic default josekis over and over again. Also, it combines playing and studying ...

Re: Stuck at 11k KGS

For someone it is for someone it isn't.

Also to appreciate Bat's lectures you have to be at least SDK. If someone enjoys reading books, why shouldn't he.

I don't think you have to be at least SDK to appreciate Bats lectures. I think the best thing about the lectures is that they teach you about ...

Re: Stuck at 11k KGS

I don't get why reading one of the best books about Go strategy written (part of - assumingly) by a professional Go player is worse than watching a lot of lukewarm explanations from a KGS 5-dan? (Bat is better in this regard, but I still don't get the point).

Playing a lot of games while studying ...

Re: Stuck at 11k KGS

Why would you read books about go when you're a kyu? I don't get it. Seems extremely inefficient to me.

I think your time is far better spent playing more games and watching lectures to get a feel for how the game should be played.

Use josekipedia and eidogo for joseki.

If you want to grow up to be big and strong, just play a lot, watch Battousai and Murugandi lectures and eat your cornflakes.

Re: Just made SDK. Mada mada!

Regarding game 1 above, black can surely connect on the other side, namely L11 rather than L9. Once that fight is lost, then the E5 cutting point becomes a real problem. Oddly enough, black actually spent a little while (20 seconds or so) thinking about this, so its a surprising error.

True. I ...

Re: Just made SDK. Mada mada!

It's been a long time since my last entry now. Fell off the wagon in a major way. Didn't play much and loitered forever at 3k and 2k until I started playing seriously again. Failed miserably at getting to Shodan before Christmas. I have now recently made 1k on KGS, going on 14 straight wins and I ...

Re: Trying to become pro

Aiming for pro when you're only 7 kyu. That's pretty ballsy.

I started playing go about 5 months ago and my passion and progression was fairly strong, and like you, I could see myself obtaining the hand of god in the near future. I'm currently 3 kyu on KGS. Yet, though I played a ton before, for ...

Re: Just made SDK. Mada mada!

After bordering on 3 kyu for a while, I've finally crossed over.

I wont make shodan before christmas at this rate though.

It might not make a difference, but he's a bit stronger than 6 kyu. More like 4 kyu.

Settle this argument for me

Me and my roomate played a game and in review this position came up. My opinion is that it's favorable for white, while he smugly remarked he'd "take black all day". It almost came to blows. Please settle this argument for us.

Do you prefer black or white on this board?

The board:

Re: Philosophy: 'is' and 'ought'

Not really. But if you tried to define ought as "the result of god's word" what do you make of the statement "I ought to obey the dictates of this god". That is surely a well formed question in ethics.

Re: Just made SDK. Mada mada!

After a fairly slow start to my 4 kyu career, it seems I've finally captured some momentum again. 9 wins in a row and counting and 14 wins in a row only broken up by a 1.5 moku loss. After 7 days as 4 kyu, I'm about halfway to 3kyu, which is more or less on pace for making shodan before christmas. I ...

Re: Philosophy: 'is' and 'ought'

I don't seem to recall anyone making that argument. Additionally, your... abrasive... approach is somewhat out of character for these forums...

The whole thread is about whether or not you can derive an "ought" from an "is". That is the is-ought problem.

Sorry about my abrasive approach. I'm not ...
