Re: attacking a two-space extension

Sorry to bump an old topic - but I also am wondering a lot about the approach "C" to the 2-space extension. I have seen it a few times in my games. Here is an example in a recent game (BTW, is my play on the side the ideal point in this part of the opening?)

Are there any standard sequences after ...

Please review a recent game, trying to get to SDK

So, I took another break from go recently and now returned, I am still trying to break through to SDK and beyond. I seem stuck, for the moment, at KGS 10 kyu. Here is a recent game I lost by about 20 points.

Ed, is that what you did? I can't seem to find any pros that charge less than $50/hr... :(

Re: Trying to become pro

Always comes down to distribution of effort in that 168 hours of each week. There's a reason why Yoshinori's degree is an outlier and why so few go professionals complete university studies.

Full-time professional go is without a doubt a life commitment. I love the game, but not that much.

Re: The Start Of A New Journey (Plan To Become Pro)

I don't think 2 years is long enough. Perhaps it would be if you were already 5 dan.

I firmly believe that anyone can do anything, but a certain time frame is needed.

Even if you spent 8 hours a day studying go in a highly effective manner (very difficult), it would still take a minimum of 3 ...

Re: SoDesuNe paves his road to Shodan

Studying 10+ hours a day is frightening. Go is beautiful, exciting, and extremely interesting to me - and I would never spend that much time on it. 10 hours? With 10 free hours a day divided differently, you could learn to play classical guitar, speak a new foreign language, learn to sketch ...

Re: First go goal: stable mid-SDK by September

Got it nyuubi. First change to my schedule: I will play a lot more games and study a bit less. Maybe 10-12 serious games a week (1-2 / night), perhaps more, and 1 hour of tsumego/1 hour of tesuji each night.

Re: First go goal: stable mid-SDK by September

tchan: Yes, I've read those awesome posts before and I really appreciate your site. I generally stick with the "read out all variations, slowly but surely, until certain of the answer" method, but it does take a lot longer and frustrates me more when I see I've spent an hour studying and only ...

Re: First go goal: stable mid-SDK by September

Snorri, interesting point. I suppose I don't care about my kgs rank too much, only my strength - if I am consistently playing strongly against 7 or 8 kyu players, I will be happy even if my numerical rank is not climbing in proportion.

I know that to get through to SDK and to stabilize my playing ...

Re: First go goal: stable mid-SDK by September

I agree with the suggestions about study/game proportions. I will probably do 1 hour tsumego, 1 hour tesuji problems, and 1 serious game each night (perhaps 2 games). It is definitely easier to study rather than play, and sometimes I just don't feel like playing, but I understand at this stage its ...

First go goal: stable mid-SDK by September

Hello all! I decided to post a study journal here to organize my thoughts, obtain input and encouragement from others, and put a direct goal forward for my go progress. I started playing Go around April of 2011, played on and off for a while, and essentially gave it up almost entirely by September ...

Re: Slaughtered on Tygem, but enjoyed game

Ed and Joaz, as usual, thank you very much for your help. I feel like discussing my games and mistakes on these boards really helps me clarify how to become stronger most efficiently, and your repeated help has been a great asset.

I have decided to not make another thread but to post a new game in ...

Re: Slaughtered on Tygem, but enjoyed game

Oh my, you're right. I can't believe I didn't see that. I just looked at the shape and my mind yelled: "There is still potential for 2 eyes!" I let him resurrect himself!

Yes - move 83 definitely should have been P10. Yikes. Back to tsumego weight-lifting for me.

Any other nightmarish moves to ...

Slaughtered on Tygem, but enjoyed game

Hello all. Well, I can't seem to stop taking long breaks from go and then coming back and playing like crazy. (I think some consistency would help me out a lot, but that's for another discussion). I just started playing on the Tygem servers, and people there seem to be stronger than on KGS. I set my ...

Re: Help me see: game with several mistakes and 1-point move

Haha yes uberdude. The ultimate wisdom in go: slow down and think! When I said I didn't really think through moves, I meant the tactical, local moves. Like #69 where I did not think about how to better use that situation.

Obviously I'd do better if I spent more time in these areas, but I'm ...
