Re: Climate change / global warming

This is the kind of statistic that always grates somewhat.

I mean I agree that quantity of opinion does not necessarily reflect quality of opinion, but there's a certain rebellious streak in the deniers which seems to equate paucity of opinion with brilliance.

Also, who are these people denying ...

Re: Climate change / global warming

I find the reasoning behind this argument both impractical and unscientific.

If global warming were a complete hoax it would be a disaster. The amount of funding that goes into solving this problem could alleviate or help other problems that are confirmed, like starvation, housing, slavery, human ...

Re: Climate change / global warming

Hmm... Not sure I ever claimed that both sides are equal in the sense you try to exploit here. What I mean is that there are ulterior motives and propaganda on both sides, without quantifying how much on each side and from which corner.

I realize that your post does not strictly say that. It ...

Re: SportAccord World Mind Games Online Tournament

Its surprising, im guessing the IGF pushed for it? it goes against the outline of the original tournament (which is to find the strongest players no matter what).

Please tell me where you saw this "find the strongest players no matter what" outline.

The text on the site has changed many times ...

Re: SportAccord World Mind Games Online Tournament

Had totally missed the amateur restriction.

Its surprising, im guessing the IGF pushed for it? it goes against the outline of the original tournament (which is to find the strongest players no matter what).

Anyway much better . Still very difficult, because all the insei houses can still play it ...

Re: SportAccord World Mind Games Online Tournament

Awesome. Now danigabi has a chance to enter and hopefully represent Argentina
http://lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4558

I did sign up but its a pretty ridicolous tournament. Properly propagated, the winner of this tournament would be stronger than any other participant in the event ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

@RobertJaseik, Yes, I'm probably conflating the two.

... But the pros end up representing me, or i have to fight them for it. ...

It seems clear enough that in this case, anyway, the team is specifically from the US, and so it is *not* representing you. I guess the ideal solution, for you ...

Well, if you have been trained in Korea - doesn't that place your ability to represent Argentina in some doubt?

Yes i do believe such studies make me a little less representative than say, Aguilar who never spent considerable ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

There is an old saying, Be careful you don't get what you wish for. I think that sums up some of the angst in the western go world.

Some Europeans wished they didn't have to compete with Orientals or put up with Oriental ways, then they feign surprise if some Orientals start to feel unwelcomed and ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

Conanbatt:
your criterions for choosing a representative are somewhat unusual, compared to other sports with the same issue. basing the decision on where you learned your skills and where you played more is not unreasonable but pretty unsystematic and hard to measure. as far as i know, citizenship ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

I dont know of any invitation from the AGA to anything, which i think its natural. AGA is for USA, and they shouldnt be in charge of what happens below. which is why i say that if the AGA decided that the reps were going to be USA or Canada, they didnt do the best but its Sports Accord's fault for ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

Half of what you say is a strawman, the other half is false.

Of course non-nationals should be residents of the countries they represent. Or more informally, they should have made a commitment to their country, when it comes to these international competitions. But Mingjiu and Feng Yun and Jie ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

You are not from the USA, so perhaps you don't understand this, but there is no way that we would ever not let these players represent us. And if we're told otherwise, especially by someone who is not even one of us, we're gonna tell them where to shove it. I mean, the bleeping gall of you ...

Re: SportAccord Mind Games US and EU teams

The US team is made up of:
Jie Li, 7d
Andy Liu, 7d
Mingjiu Jiang, 7p
Ke Huang, 7d
Yun Feng (F), 9p
Yun Feng and Jie Li will play pair go.

I must admit i am fairly angry at this tournament. First of all its not US team, but Americas.

Second of all, how representative are these players to ...
