Re: Mirror Mirror
I wonder why on earth the server saves a flipped file, anyways. I suppose it's just the way the ancient server has always stored its data, but not flipping it to the way the rest of the world works before sending out the sgf is confusing!
The server shows you one side of the board and your ...

Re: KPMC 2013
Some of the players, in particular the USA representative, appear to have started with -1 points (or at least, one less than the "top" group). I don't really understand this. Does it have something to do with the USA's poor results last year (when a strong player was unable to attend)? The USA ...

Chess pieces that are removed from the board are often called "captured", I think we just borrowed it.

Re: ABCs of Attack and Defense (Beta copies)
I take it you claim there is a fundamentally different way to solve tsumego, other than brute force?
I'm claiming that tsumego are fundamentally harder than NP, since setups involving L&D of a big group are a common way to set up hardness proofs about go, and since eg. reading ladders is PSPACE ...

Life and death is probably not in NP. It is at least PSPACE-hard.

You would really prefer using area scoring rules over having an enthusiastic and friendly teacher willing to spend time and answer question? You really think the rules issue is that important?
Is it impossible for an enthusiastic and friendly teacher to teach people using area scoring rules? I ...

Re: How do you choose your opening?
His mini-chinese end game didn't look all that great that time, maybe he was practicing on beginners.
So by "getting demolished" you mean "won" . Care to explain what Lee's major mistakes were, since obviously his 4 dan professional ("beginner"? Seriously?) opponent was too weak to demonstrate?

My favorite fuseki is diagonal 6-4's as White, because it seems to lead to unpredictable and interesting games.

Re: How do you choose your opening?
Its like Lee Changho, sure he touts his end game, but he knows if he doesn't play his standard baduk he is gonna get it handed to him. In theory he should be able to play the mini-Chinese because the beginning doesn't matter and he has superior end game abilities, but when he does play the mini ...

I'm not sure if it's van Zeijst or another strong European player who writes books, but I've read something to the effect that you should treat a group as worth -10 points for every eye it owes. So when you cut a group in two, you can estimate the value of the cut (assuming you're not planning to ...

Don't play atari all the time, just make your stones safe and don't fix Black's weaknesses for him. 'a' is more useful than 'b'. Black is cut into two weak groups.
