In a recent conversation about clock etiquette I realised that I was unsure what happens with the clocks when a game is ended with disputed life under Japanese rules. It didn't seem clear in one translation of the rules that I saw.
This discussion is based upon a question of how to deal with a ...

Re: Greed (3-3 invasion as first move)
Consequently, the meaning of these moves is most probably nothing more than "let's confuse the weak opponent".
Assuming this interpretation is correct, these moves lack respect towards the opponent. If somebody argues otherwise, then the discussion would probably extend to philosophical areas in ...

Re: Trying to become pro
As a player who has always put trophies before money, I may not have the right temperament to focus on what steps are needed to be a pro at Go. What I thought I would give is some techniques that would allow you to become much stronger but some of them may be overkill for your ambition.

Re: Initiatives for a Professional System in the West
Poker is a gambling game. Of course Go won't reach that level of popularity. And yes, while I know Go is also a popular gambling game, it depends on where you are.
And yes, I think Go can surpass Chess in popularity given time and growth. But of course I'd say that.

Re: Trying to become pro
First comment:
To make it to the top level requires an almost delusional level of self belief. To become pro is a combintation of natural ability, ambition and willpower. Ironically, natural ability isn't always critical.
The current memory world champion started out taking more than 45 minutes to ...

Re: Initiatives for a Professional System in the West
Some interesting debate on here.
What makes most pro-games flourish is an audience. The question is does the US (Europe doesn't) have an exiting audience base that would be able to finance a professional league in the long-term.
Games with high luck can easily develop a pro-base because there is ...

Re: Scottish championship game
You don't have to write anything for the rank if you don't think you have an accurate one right now. But I have a feeling here that, while you are maybe not 5k, you are not strong enough to be certain about your criticism of a 1d-2d KGS game. That is not to say your criticism is strictly wrong, but ...

I felt my 7 kyu comment on this 1 dan was already an overplay but you beat me by far.
You probably mean H2 after which b connects at G4. If W next defends his H2 group sooner or later his corner will get killed by C3. But he will undoubtly be grateful for your more fundamental remarks.

Re: Influence vs territory question
My first instinct was easily But sente might be worth a lot there certainly seems a lot of play left in the game. What concerns me though, is that the corner doesn't seem as secure as I would like and I think black can exploit the attack at H3 and extend the right hand corner before attacking at the ...
