Re: Why I quit watching sandbagger series on youtube

I think if you tell someone it's a teaching game and that you're recording it for youtube or that they're live on Twitch it probably would affect the play of many or most people. Just as a hunch. Whether this matters or not I'm not sure.

I had to play a (serious league) game against a much ...

Re: Why I quit watching sandbagger series on youtube

I never got into this type of Go content, but I always thought: It wouldn't cost anything to tell the opponents "I am X dan in this system, do you fancy a teaching game without handicap. It will be shown on youtube on this channel..." and take it from there.

Re: Young Korean pro Kim Eunji banned for 1 year for AI chea

I can't speak for others, but, myself, I'm not commenting on guilt / innocence because I simply don't know.

Well, there is a confession. And the confession exists only because Korean professionals had none of the concerns vented in this community when faced with a cheater in the European Team ...

Re: Young Korean pro Kim Eunji banned for 1 year for AI chea

I am kind of confused that no one makes the case for her innocence. Afaik korean professionals questioned her on the back of "AI move" percentages below what many on this forum happily defended in mid-dan amateur players.

Re: “Decision: case of using computer assistance in League A

As for the 98% matching evidence, you must understand that matching one of a bot's top three choices was chosen in order to generate impressive matching numbers, not through any theory of how a player might have cheated. (This motive may have been unconscious.) And restricting the possible matches ...

Re: “Decision: case of using computer assistance in League A

I believe the ideal of no false positives is really unhealthy. It almost guarantees there will be a lot of false negatives (i.e. only a few cheaters are caught). Since so few are caught, they receive the whole ire of the community and likely exemplary (harsh) treatment. Since the treatment is so ...

Re: To kill or not to kill. That is the problem.

66 at E5 would simplify the game a lot.

184 is very small. If you truly believe Black can cut then you should defend now, if you think Black can't cut you should make a big move elsewhere.

186 is unnecessary. You can capture cutting attempts in a net. The way you attempt to cut, you could even ...

Re: Have you ever cheated at go?

This topic has some severe self-selection bias ...

Imo, in pseudonymous online play any consistent conduct is fair. If someone wants to spend his time as user interface for a bot, who cares? Rating exists to sort this out. This might be a good learning experience for him, but I would expect him to ...

Re: Lost match - need pointers

Thanks as well.

Several dubious moves are rather following through w/ a wrong train of thought. E.g. after C8 C10 answering E8 (allowing White to connect out) would amount to admitting that C8 was bad. Thus I played to keep them separate. However, I am not sure I have a good alternative to C8. C11 ...

Lost match - need pointers

Ruthless critique of misconceptions, errors and bad reading displayed by the loser in the attached game, please.

I intended to play solidly and let the opponent overreach (German 1/2 dans tend to do) and profit later in the game by harassing the abundant number of groups. I would prefer if the ...

Re: The KGS is dead, long live the KGS ?

OGS limits my choice of opponent, KGS gives the option to reject challengers. OGS forces me to finish games with unpleasant people (e.g. insulting you in chat), KGS allows me walk away, but people might walk away from a game w/ me as well. W/ both sets of policy some people will complain about it ...

Re: Sandbagging

Here in Germany you can assign any rank to yourself. That has led to the situation that many players are much weaker than their suggested rank is according to the EGF rating. Comparing to that sandbagging is quite rare. That's why I think that Kirby's approach is valid, that you have to earn your ...

Re: Shouldn't Go have English terminologies for US and EU?

If you want to reach children and pensioners (the two demographics I eye for the spread of Go) using a foreign language is not a good idea.

Oh, I think that children take it in their stride. They are, after all, superb language learners.

True. And it is easier for everyone to say "atari" then ...
