Re: Western Chess, Xiangqi, or Shogi?
Shogi is definitely my choice. I used to be a tournament chess player but I think Shogi is better, not only because of the drops, but because the pieces are a little weaker (no queen rampaging around the board). It's less about brute material force and places more emphasis on strategy.

Re: Go books on Amazon? Highway robbery!
Does anyone know why Go books are going for such outrageous prices on Amazon? "Reducing Territorial Frameworks" is going for $300 new and $40 used.
"Opening Theory Made Easy" is $74 used.
"Invincible, The Games of Shusaku" is $300 new.
"Get Strong at" books are anywhere from $50 to $170.

Re: Language discussion
I'd also recommend the program Human Japanese to gain a foothold in the language (and learn hiragana and katakana more thoroughly while you're at it). As a bonus, the developer is about to release the new intermediate version in the next month or two so you could transition right into it if you ...

Re: Book Help
I need some help deciding which Go books I should buy. I have read Go for Beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto and while I found it helpful, it was also very light since it went over just the basics. I am looking for a new meater book to digest. I am trying to decide between Elementary Go Series and Learn to ...

Re: Go Child No Longer Free
I paid the $12 a few weeks ago. At first, I was annoyed having to pay for a site that used to be free, but I do think the cost is well worth it. I use it literally every day on my laptop at work and I like the variety of problems it offers, including the Segoe tesuji dictionary. I've solved nearly ...

Re: How to judge a book
To the OP- I received 5 S&S books just a few days ago (I purchased two of the bundles currently for sale). I really like the S&S books that I have, although I probably only have about a dozen of their books, which is a small sampling of their entire selection.

Re: Book suggestions
To the OP, I'd recommend the "Graded Go Problems for Beginners" series and/or "1001 Life and Death Problems". Once you have a more thorough understanding of life and death/tesuji concepts by solving problems, everything else will make more sense.

Never met Richard, but still sad to hear the news. Just made a quick count and found that I own nine of his books. Hopefully his contributions will continue to pave the way for more western players.
Re: Chinese
The best online Mandarin language training resource happens to be free, but unfortunately it isn't for beginners:

You might try Maeda Nobuaki's "Life and Death: Intermediate Level Problems". It's a pocket sized yellow book that only costs $8 at Slate and Shell

Re: Useful books to become stronger
The way I look at Kageyama's "Lessons" is this: if you like motivational-type books, you'll probably love Lessons. If you don't, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.
Personally, I never particularly cared for Lessons (nor do I like motivational books), but I can see why others would like it.
