Re: Japanese pro earnings 2024

This reminds me of a paper I read in grad school, which discussed how compensating people based on tournament results incentivizes performance. They evaluate golf scores in professional tournaments, which have a similar drop-off in prize money as go tournaments. Paper is here:

Re: Women or females?

My first reaction is that many sporting events have a broad range of participants, and using "women" instead of "female" makes sense. At a local tennis tournament, you may see categories such as: under 12 boys, under 12 girls, under 18 boys, under 18 girls, men, women, senior men, and senior women ...

Re: Could this happen in Go? :)

This sort of falls into the prearranged category:

The strongest players at the US Go Congress would often have grueling schedules, playing in the US Open during the morning, and then the North American Masters Tournament after dinner.

One day towards the end of the week, two strong players who ...

Re: You can stick this in your pipe

T Mark liked to play fast. At the Colorado Springs Go Congress, I remember he played Martin Lebl, and heartily thanked him for playing quickly. I don't even think he cared if he won or lost - was just happy to have his preferred cadence.

I understand almost everything in Keith's haiku at the end ...

Re: My first ever US visit: Congress, and where else to go?

Being on the west coast, you can experience a lot of nice things just traveling north (to the Seattle area) and south (to California).

But there's also a lot to experience just in Oregon. The beaches are wonderful and unique (the film The Goonies was filmed at Cannon Beach). Mt. Hood is one of the ...

AGA link on closing of Seattle Go Center

The AGA reports on the relocation of the Seattle Go Center. https://www.usgo.org/content.aspx?page_id=5&club_id=454497&item_id=91235&

It seems to be copied from a longer Seattle Times article, which is here:

Re: Dennis Wheeler

Dennis was reliably steady as a game recorder, and he was quietly valuable solving behind the scenes technical problems. I don't think I ever saw him in a bad mood.

He will definitely be missed.

Re: Hare matches tortoise

My take is:

The evaluation has little to do with one stone vs. two stone ponnukis, and more to do with whole board balance.

Re: (Opinion Poll) Plan to Abolish the Dep. of Baduk Studies

Maybe I missed it, but how large is the current faculty? And are they permanent, or do they find guest lecturers from around the world that rotate in and out?

If this program were abolished, would the faculty leave academia altogether and assume a completely different career?

Re: Hello from a late starter

Welcome to the forum Peter.

Go can be a struggle if you are trying to plow through the ranks on your own. You get beat up on the board but you don't know why.

If you can find someone local who is a little stronger (or a lot stronger) than you, they can help identify some weaknesses.

Also, there ...

Re: Chess cheating blog post

There must be lots of games where a grandmaster plays in a tournament (online or OTB) against someone rated 300 points lower. If that population of games also contains a fair number of near engine-perfect games by the grandmaster, it would support kvasir's theory.

Re: Chess cheating blog post

My opinion on a player having relatively many 100% games: most likely, this means a) he has studied with AI a lot and applies his acquired knowledge in AI playing style or b) he cheats. Statistics cannot distinguish these two possibilities if correlations are derived from several engines.

I would ...
