Re: EGF vs AGA pros win-and-continue match

Hmmm ... why the ruling should be applied to future cases?

It's standard tournament practice for rulings to be applied consistently and objectively. We don't know for certain that a similar situation will never be reproduced because we don't even know what the rules are. Maybe next time, Windows ...

Re: EGF vs AGA pros win-and-continue match

Also Justin Teng should be more concrete.

As a third-party observer, it's not my right to speak for the players/organizers involved or leak information that they have communicated to each other in private. If they want to do so (as Hajin, Gansheng, and Ryan have), they can do so themselves. I don ...

Re: An interesting coincidence seen on Tygem

Those are just promotional proxy boards to let people know when the games are happening and allow people to bet on the games ahead of time. The actual games haven't happened yet. They're both on 3/25, with the first one at 2 pm KST and the second one at 7 pm KST.

Re: Kirby's Study Journal

I think most of your comments about the game were on the right track. I would just focus on making sure you're getting value (whether in terms of territory or influence or potential or whatever) for all of your moves. Of course this is pretty hard and requires strong reading and judgment, but for ...

Re: "Snowballing your advantage" in Go?

I think in Go, snowballing is more about limiting the chances or possibilities for your opponent to attain victory rather than increasing a marginal lead in points. Kind of like what AVAVT said, when you gain an advantageous board position and then simplify the board, it's similar to taking ...

Re: Correlation between chess ratings (in Elo) and Go ranks

I've always considered 2500 (grandmaster in chess?) to be weak pro strength equivalent in Go, as (I think) there's about the same number of chess grandmasters as there are Go professionals (~1400 vs ~1300). Because the top pros can probably give the weakest pros several stones, this would put the ...

...and then there is Zen on kgs, which is 4d in slow games and 5d in blitz (9x15 seconds). I believe it runs on MCTS.

It is quite strong. :X

Re: How do you like game reviews?

I feel that you learn the most from the harshest reviews, as what the stronger player tells you sticks in your head better. :P Guess it depends on your personality though and how you handle criticism.

Re: Best online pro teachers?

Another successful recent student of his is Calvin Sun (AGA rating 7.7), who was a youth junior and senior rep in the World Youth Goe Championship for a few years in a row and was a 3-time Redmond Cup winner.

Another noticeable student of his is Aaron Ye (AGA 5d now) who just won his first ...

Re: Best online pro teachers?

If you do pick Mingjiu, make sure you are either good at tsumego or good at push-ups.

I have friends from both teachers' students, and I guess I can say that both teachers do a pretty good job. Mingjiu is harsher like others said. Yilun Yang's price is a little bit cheaper I think, but don't quote ...

Re: Growth

From a concern over rank, you should just play +/-1 from your rank, and you'll still get a good game either way. No need to go out of your way to play people several ranks down or several ranks up (unless you're interested in playing a handicap game). I find this works out pretty well, since you ...

Usually if you're lagging and you click on "server stats," it'll detect the lag and disconnect you immediately. If that doesn't work...go get a new computer/internet provider. :D

Re: How to get better

After looking at a few moves in your game, here's a few general suggestions that should easily get you to sdk and beyond.

1. Don't make empty triangles. No matter whether or not it's a good empty triangle, don't do them for now, because more then likely 90% of them will be bad.

2. Keep your ...
