big ugly hack worked (http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=98243#p98243)
copied the downloaded jar file to:
/usr/lib/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/ext
the other solution did NOT work (the one with the command line switch: javaws -J-Dsun.sound.useNewAudioEngine ...
