Kaya.gs is already virtually open source.

All you have to do to contribute is ask conanbatt, and he'll give you access to the relevant parts of the code.

But, whatever, do it again from scratch if you feel like it.

Have you looked into kaya? It's partially open-source, has a solid foundation and they welcome collaborators.

I did find it funny that the 'killer feature' is something that two other major servers (OGS and DGS) have done for many years very well and you can even add in many other sites that do this. It is a nice feature though.
