I doubt I would let my kid go to asia to study to become pro. Even if he/she was 7d at the age of 12.
Probably even if I could - through magic - be sure that my kid will succeed and turn pro.

Re: Report: European Go Congress 2011
Self-promotion is a good thing. In the AGA, you can rate club games, so long as participants agree and you either do not use time limits or use appropriate time limits (much like the Congress self-paired games). I've always thought that more people should make use of that option, rather than just ...

Re: Making a Goban
There was a thread on L19 (or was it godiscussions?) where somebody did what you are looking for. I only remember that he was pretty unlucky with the wood because there was a "branch-spot" (don't know the word, what I mean is a spot that leads to a branch so the spot on the wood is kinda dark and ...

Re: Symbian/Java Go AI: is there any?
Maybe this: http://gnugo.en.softonic.com/symbian
It will most probably be very weak though. (at least if you're not going to wait a day for a move
)
If you got a web-connection, you could also use this: http://wap-go.com/ (very light web-interface for gnugo)
(found both at http://senseis.xmp.net/?Mobilephone)

Re: Rereading
By the time you understand a book you're strong enough to not need it anymore
I would even be bold enough to say that this only holds for bad books. Good books will help you understand new things and concepts, while a bad book will only tell you a move at A is better than B without giving any ...

Re: composing go problems.
I do not remember where I read it, but in some book the author listed three ways of composing problems:
- get them from games, modify if necessary
- for tesuji problems or a theme, just build around that certain thing, combine themes, add distracting stones for harder-to-see solutions
- randomly ...

Re: TouchClock
I just tried it and if looks cool
The only small improvement it could see is a monospace font. In my opinion that's a must for all clocks, but even the Offscreen-app you linked to does not use it.
Too bad I don't really play go often, I would use this clock just for fun's sake.
By the way, I ...

Re: Physical Exercise and Go
I think light exercise refreshes the mind, although I have not tried it myself for a go tournament. I do know however, that after hours of sport and with an enhausted body, playing go is hard. It's just difficult to focus then.
Re: Dropbox
It's the same with most online services, would you want google/microsoft/.. to read all your mails? Just like I don't really like the idea, it's super unlikely for any google employee to be interested in exactly my mails. Same with dropbox, they are no small company.
Also, for personal files, you ...

Dropbox
Hey
I just did a quick search in the board and found out that almost nobody talked about Dropbox here before. While most probably heard about it or have it already, it may still be worth a thread. It's a rather easy to use service for file backup and synchronizing. You basically get 2GB (for free ...

Re: silly game on a goban
Hmm, anyone care to explain the rules in detail? Looks like there is some time setting? and also some kind of penalty shooting
uh-oh, hope i don't get banned for this

Re: Attacking correctly
Thanks for all replies, it looks like I still have to tweak my feeling of a good and bad sequence.
In the end, white gets no territory out of his three stones, and only destroys maybe 10 black points. (if black did not attack but play defensively) Blacks three stones increase the aji in the corner ...

Guess that's why I'm no Dan.
I didn't think about white 2 at 4, and can't find the solution right now. Didn't look in your thread, yet.
