The competition for January is half over, I'm afraid. But if there's enough interest, another can be arranged for February.Menezes wrote:Are subscriptions to SDK still on? If so, I'd like to way in!

Re: studying from books
Beginner-friendly communities are easily found on both servers.
"Friendly" is not the salient point. If you prefer concrete numbers: at the time of writing this post, kaya has about 50 users online (about 60% of which are idle), KGS's English Game Room alone has about 1000 (about 30% of which are ...

Not that I wish to start an argument in an irrelevant thread, but I am going to go ahead and recommend KGS as well as kaya here. (I think it's rather brazen to plug the new server that has barely any members and deliberately omit the infinitely more popular one - the aim in ...

Re: studying from books
Some books are simply better than others, and some better than others for certain readers.
There aren't a heck of a lot of books that I think beginners can be expected to understand categorically. The "Learn To Play Go" is quite clear, and there are others.

"disappointed" may be a regrettable user name if you intend to participate in the forum beyond this one message about a vendor.

Re: round robin kyu tourney
In a week's time, enough people have signed up that we had to break it into DDK and SDK brackets, and allow the entire month of Jan for people to have enough time to get in all their games.
Feedback from players during the process will heavily influence subsequent tournament efforts. Can't wait to ...

The real trick to having more games being played is to stick around and play some games. It's circular, but that really is the way it works.

Re: round robin kyu tourney
It's pretty informal. People have been just telling me in kaya chat that they want in, and depending on their kaya rank they fall into one of the groups.

Re: round robin kyu tourney
As kaya's user base is international, my inclination is to have open scheduling spanning several days to include a full non-holiday weekend.

round robin kyu tourney
For kyu players on kaya.gs, as discussed shortly ago in the Main chat room on kaya:
To take place after the xmas holidays, Fischer 30/20 time controls, unrated, 19x19, Japanese scoring.
If enough people sign on, might break it into DDK & SDK groups.
If interested, can mention it here. If *really ...

Fade to 2 people at a coffee shop over a chess board.
Player 1: [turns over king despairingly] "There's more to life than just shooting aliens, but this just isn't my game? What am I supposed to do?"
Spectator: [thumbs at table with cute geek girls sipping tea over a goban at nearby table] "Just ...
