The on-demand printed book tchan001 posted was ordered from the Kiseido website. So this is not something specific to ordering from Amazon.

Re: Poor quality Kiseido books from Amazon

I have emailed Kiseido and got a response directly from Mr. Bozulich. He has confirmed that they use Amazon's on-demand printing and that quality is sometimes not very good, "but after two or three copies, they improve". He suggested that I notify Amazon about quality issues (which I did). He also ...

Re: Poor quality Kiseido books from Amazon

The book I got looks just like yours, tchan001. The worst part is how some of the black stones on the diagrams are solid black, and some aren't.

Re: Poor quality Kiseido books from Amazon

A comment on Reddit pointed out that the most likely explanation is that the publisher of the book is a scammer impersonating Kiseido. The name of the publisher is written as "Kiseido Puyblishing Company", with a typo. So at least this isn't the case of the real Kiseido dramatically lowering their ...

Product link on amazon.ca
"Ships from and sold by Amazon.ca." Apparently, printed by them as well.

Poor quality Kiseido books from Amazon

I just received a Kiseido book I ordered on Amazon: A Survey of the Basic Tesujis by Richard Bozulich. It is brand new, but the cover is heavily pixelated and the print quality is very low. The text and diagrams are stippled gray instead of solid black, presumably to save ink. The paper feels cheap ...

Tibetan board games

Many people are aware of tibetan go, played on a 17x17 board with special capture rules.
It seems there are also other games played in Tibet using black and white stones. One of them is played on a 14x14 board. Does anyone know what this game is?

It seems that humans don't have a reliable equivalent of a "value network" - direct whole-board intuition about who is ahead. Instead, even the professionals have to count each time before reaching any conclusions.

You can learn a lot more from the games you've lost, not the games where you completely crushed your opponent.

Re: The KGS is dead, long live the KGS ?

As for the "?", maybe it would be enough to tweak KGS's ranking algorithm so that it doesn't take games against "?" marked people into account (except when both players are "?").

What happens is:
- 4k player is new, gets "?" no one plays them (more on that why)
- they manage to play some ranked ...

Re: AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo: 50 Self-Play Games (May 2017)

I wonder why these games feel so much more "bot-like" than the mostly-human feeling of the moves AlphaGo played against Ke Jie and Lee Sedol.
Because as soon as Ke Jie plays enough inefficient moves in the opening, Alphago takes advantage of them. From that point Alphago is in the lead, and is ...

The community is just too small. Things were much better during the Hikaru boom. Also the decline of KGS has fractured the online community even more.
