Re: Japanese Go Books: Reccomendations please

- A Joseki book that can be used for an in depth study of joseki would be great. I don't want a joseki dictionary that just lists possible variations, but something that explains the meanings of moves and discusses the strengths/weaknesses of the finished positions. (Is there such a book?)

Well, i ...

Re: 501 tesuji problems

Well K74 is a book that seems to be readable if you're about 5kyu, so it's definately worth studying.

But the book can still be useful for people at 5-Dan so if you're frustrated, realize that 2-Dan people will get like 25% of the problems wrong, though they are likely spending 45 seconds to look ...

Re: Too many go books sinking the game boat.

I think the more books the better too!

It's pretty common in chess, poker, or go, where when you are reading new material that you're partially absorbing new ideas and your game deteriorates...

Think of it as experimenting!

I'm curious too, what books you were peeking at, and what were some ...

tekesta: Perhaps the best book on weiqi I ever saw was an untranslated Chinese edition. I need to go back and look at it. I find the Chinese weiqi books to be very well written. Yutopian's English translations of Chinese publications I regard highly.

which book was it?

Bantari: The notion of 'more books' is also invalid, I think, on the face value. We have plenty of books... more than I can afford at the moment. So when speaking of books/materials, we need to qualify some more, as I do below.

I think the more books the better really. Until you get 95% of the ...

cttsui (13 kyu): I am new to Go, and I don't know the right way to study. It seems as though one has to just sit down and memorize many josekis....

oren: If you're new to go, you don't have to sit down and memorize joseki. That is one of the last things you need to worry about.

Re: Differences between Western and Asian Books

- When I was living in Japan, Why? was often a challenge to provide justification. If a stronger player said, "You should have played here," without explanation, one might reply, "If I had played there, . . ." to get an explanation, which was usually a variation or two. Or one might simply say, "I ...
