Re: Was my invasion correct?

I remember some years ago a number of us, including some dan players, were trying to solve a problem on Sensei's Library. The key play was found by a beginner.

Listen.

Yea, but if the beginner is just asserting a that x is good strategy and he can't prove that x is good strategy I have no way ...

Re: Was my invasion correct?

White had the whole top of the board and I was getting nervous that they were taking up too much territory in the top, so I decided to invade though it looked like a rather risky invasion.
What you have there is territory envy

Many of us suffer from it. The cure is to learn to count.

I don't ...

Re: Was my invasion correct?

I guess I underestimated the power of the sgf tages. Like I said my invasion is at move 47.

Was my invasion correct?

In the attachments you will see that I invaded at g18. I'm Black. White had the whole top of the board and I was getting nervous that they were taking up too much territory in the top, so I decided to invade though it looked like a rather risky invasion. The invasion ultimately worked in the sense ...

Re: how good was lasker at go?

Felix Dueball was the strongest player in germany at the time, and he (eventually) reached 2d.
There is a book about him (german though) by Günter Cießow: "Felix Dueball. Go-Pionier aus Berlin."
Although I read it, I can't recall reading about Laskers playing strength in it. But it might be in ...

how good was lasker at go?

One of the greatest chess players, Lasker (ok, 27 years world chess champion) wrote a book on go. Does anyone know how good he was at go? My guess is the game was not well known in Europe at the time so he didn't have chance to shine.

what is wrong with the 4-5 and 3-5 joseki?

I read somewhere on senseis (can't find it now) that the stats on joseki are:

3-4 47%
4-4 46%
3-5 2%
4-5 2%
3-3 2%
other 1%

well, what's wrong with 3-5 and 4-5?

Re: what is your play/study ratio

I think that you should play more than study until you are around the 7 kyu range. Thats when you really start understanding your mistakes and how to correct them. Although, I also like to study before playing if I feel I have been sub-par in recent games I've played. I always review my games right ...

Re: what is your play/study ratio

I seriously doubt that playing six games a day is bad for your Go. Making the same mistakes over and over again is a much faster route to improvement than delaying your next game until you're sure you won't repeat your last mistake.

But there are two types of mistakes, sorry to quote Rumsfeld ...

You are so on target. That's why I like to play the computer at level 1 dan.

what is your play/study ratio

For every 100 minutes you play go, how many minutes do you study?

I'm a studyholic so for every 100 minutes I play I study about 500 minutes. I see no point in playing if you don't know how to play. Of course, it takes a lot of practice to learn to apply what you've learned and to stop making ...
